REMIXES, YES OR NO??

k guys, got a topic I wanna lay down here...

When I first started with trance music and djing, I always wanted the originals, because "remixes where nothing but copies of the original"...

However, lately I start to appreciate remixes more and more. Now is my question, do you guys think remixes add something extra to the scene or the music?

Remixes are AWESOME ... they allow you to play a familiar track without everybody going "yeah, I heard that before". If a remix has a different feel/atmosphere to it, you can stick it in a set where the original track would be out of place.
True, some of the remixes are a joke and aren't worht the vinyl they're pressed on, but many are a beautiful variation of the original tune. So don't automatically rule out the rmx - give it a listen @ the record store before you buy your vinyl ... that's how I found some crazy tunes ...

remixes r great. if it wasnt for remixes there would be a lot less tunes for us to listen to. a lot of original songs are greatly improved by remixes.take all of matt dareys mixes for example. blocksters grooveline was a crappy poppy house song until darey remixed and turned it into a superb trance tune. the tiesto and airscape mixes of delerium - silence also improve the song. even though the original is great, the trancey effect is the reason the tune has become a huge hit. the original has been out for well over a year now. long live remixes!!!!!

I LOVE remixes, especially tunes which combine the musical talents of two of your favourite artists. I'am sure that all of us have heard remixes which have been better that the orignal version!

P.S. Matt darey is cool but I've found that all of his tunes & remixes sound the same.

i love remixes, not only do they give me something new to spin, but a remix will also often give life back to an original track that's been around for a while and.

and some remixes are simply brilliant! ferry corsten's remix of "barbers adagio for strings" is just beautiful, and at a much faster pace then william orbit's original. matt darey made an incredible remix of gabrielle's "rise" which was not originally a trance track at all but a mellow pop/rock tune.

also some remixes, have turned into classics, and are simply a "must have". case in point, paul van dyk's remix of "binary finary (1998)"

i think you should look at remixes as giving a new interpretation to an existing original. you definitely shouldn't isolate yourself to spinning originals only.

Remixes certainly add to trance, especially when they are done on songs that are of a different genre. Sure, the original Delerium - Silence is a great song, but because of Tiesto and Airscape we've got a great new trance song to add to sets.

In addition, even trance tunes that are remixed add alot of flavor to the scene. Deepsky's - Stargazer is a piece of art, but X-Cabs created a completely new song with a familar sound.

I have to agree with this sentence. Remixes are awesome if the remixer had at least the same talent as the composer of the original track. I love remixes containing the style of both the remixer and the original composer. Try this good old track : Nostrum - Brainchild (Taucher Remix). Fantastic track!

But of course! Example:

Underworld - Cowgirl (1993?)

Underworld vs. Bedrock - Cowgirl 2000 (2000)

Sho'nuff.

Best track ever and ever!

My favorite Remixes would have to be Transa,Airscape, and Dumonde..... Dumonde Beat just kicks ass with that Hard trance beat!!!

So I guess we all agree on that... So what's your alltime favourit remix? At the moment, I'm a huge fan of Above & Beyond remixes, like:

CHAKRA - Home (Above and beyond remix)
4 STRINGS - Daytime (Free State vocal remix)

btw, Free State is also Above & Beyond, if I'm correct...

I think esp. trance and house track remixes are great. Since there are so many skilled DJs out there, they can give new dimensions to others' productions and create exciting new vibes. However, when we are talking about traditional pop with 90% vocals, remixes can sometimes ruin the entire song. For instance I hated most remixes made of Madonna's songs and some other famous artists I heard remixed. Anyway, since trance is mainly instrumental, there's more freedom to experiment and change the original.

Currently I think DJ Tiesto's remix of the Delerium - Silence is one of the best I have ever heard. Airscape isn't far behind. They both bring something exciting to this song.
Transa, Lange, Thrillseekers and Pulsedriver are the best remixers in my opinion.
