Japan's Princess Sayako married a commoner today, in turn making her a commoner. By decree, any member of the royal family that does not marry royalty is named a "commoner". I couldn't really find much coverage on this, but CNN presented a page of facts in lieu of a real story :\

Facts about Japan's imperial family
(Reuters) -- Japan's Princess Sayako, the only daughter of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, weds her commoner fiance Yoshiki Kuroda at a Tokyo hotel on Tuesday, giving up her status as a member of the imperial family in the process.
Here are some facts about Japan's imperial household:
# Some traditionalists claim Japan's monarchy dates back 2,600 years, but modern scholars say they can trace the imperial line back only as far as about the year 400.
# Emperors were once revered as living gods, but Emperor Hirohito, who died in 1989, renounced divine status following the country's World War Two defeat. Akihito and his wife, herself a former commoner, have formed a bond with the Japanese public by presenting themselves as an "ordinary" family.
# Although according to legend Japan's imperial line descends from the goddess Amaterasu, women may not currently accede to the Chrysanthemum Throne. Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi wants parliament to pass a law enabling them to do so, in an effort to resolve a looming succession crisis caused by the fact that no boys have been born into the imperial family since 1965.
# Sayako, known informally as Nori, could also in theory rejoin the imperial family if the succession rules are changed.
# A law change would relieve pressure on Crown Princess Masako, 41-year-old wife of heir to the throne Crown Prince Naruhito, who has given birth to a daughter, Aiko, but no sons since their marriage in 1993. A former career diplomat, Masako dropped from public view for more than a year suffering from a mental disorder that royal-watchers said was partly due to the pressure to produce a male heir.
# The imperial family is rarely touched by scandal, its members spending much of their time in intellectual pursuits. Sayako was until recently a researcher at an ornithology center outside Tokyo. Her brother, Crown Prince Naruhito, wrote a thesis on mediaeval transport on the river Thames after studying in Britain, and Prince Akishino's hobby is researching the domestication of chickens. Their father has published research on the goby fish.

| This is kinda like the movie Pretty Woman in reverse. Except instead of Richard Gere, it's a guy who looks like the guy working in the kitchen at that noodle place down the street. And instead of Julia Roberts it's every white guy's fantasy, a bowing, scraping, cooking, cleaning, illiterate Japanese woman with the body of a 12-year-old boy. Loove is in the aaaaaaaaair. Still, i'd let her accede to my Chrysanthemum Throne. |
