That would be right. Typical of people to 'suddenly jump on the bandwagon because Australia have made it'. To think some people were even hating soccer before yesterday's game. Pfft

SBS all the way!!

last WC a number of stations had rights, including pay tv obviously. from memory channel 9 showed a few games.

it would be \"bloody typical\" of australians to assume the networks were poaching them coz theyve never paid soccer any attention til now  ;)

do you have a link to support that? coz based on SBS's power (ie money) i would say thats almost certainly incorrect. especially now that australia have made it. last time i think there was a sharing arrangement, with the commercial station buying all the 'big' games.

id like sbs to have it to avoid the laughable commentators 9 (i think it was 9) had last time round. but ultimately as long as its on free to air thats whats most important. unlike euro 2004

read this morning on the Herald Sun website. www.heraldsun.com.au

unless i was seeing things, im pretty sure it says it in some article.

check it ;)

what are you implying here? because if you are implying that i have jumped on the bandwagon then that is very incorrect. i have been following soccer since i lived in england as a child and have been playing on and off since then. i go for southampton which gives you a fair idea that i dont just jump on a team because it starts to win.

and the big networks do poach the broadcasting rights to major events, that they generally show no interest in. sbs has traditionally been the home of soccer and none of the major networks have paid any attention to it. you are correct about the broadcasting of the last world cup, nine broadcast the main matches that would bring in the ratings whereas sbs broadcast all the other matches. its also not just about poaching as you say the commentators from the commercial networks have no idea what they are talking about, i think sandy roberts was part of nines commentating team.

regarding the money to purchase broadcasting rights, i think sbs clearly will have the money to do it especially considering that they paid for the broadcasting rights for the ashes.

except of course that the ABC had premier league for more than a decade (much catchier intro too they had ;)) before sbs stole it, and then sbs lost out to fox for the rights so now we have nothing :(

haha, pls dont compare the world cup to the ashes! :stongue: WC will be more expensive & hotly contested. remember; its a bidding war. and the commercial stations have more cash. i wouldnt be surprised to see each and every australian game on commercial tv, but i hope im wrong.

cant find anything re broadcasting rights but im sure we\\'ll know soon enough.

oh okay just in the context of the conversation it sounded very much like a direct attack.

look i agree with you that the commercial stations have more money. but you have to consider that channel nine is the home of cricket broadcasting and for sbs to obtain the rights to the ashes which was billed as going to be the closest ashes for a long time was a huge thing. i dont think channel nine would have just lay down and accepted defeat they would have been outbid. you are probably right about the australian games will be broadcast by a commercial network:(

Both Lez Murray and Mary Kostikidis (that's SBS sport 7pm, and SBS World News 6.30pm) stated SBS will be broadcasting every match in full next year, and they both said it with a smug "stick it up your arse mainstream commercial stations" smirk on their faces.

Was it ever in doubt. They outbid the commercial stations for the Ashes, so why would they concede the world cup to them this one time after they'd had for so long with no australia?

well i wasnt aware bidding had already taken place; but even so, yeah, im surprised. in so far as them having every game's rights, i wouldve expected more of the same from 2002 tbh. but very glad im wrong :)

This is actually a good thing tho if you want to see the game do well here. This is EXACTLY what needed to happen to soccer in Australia.
Dr P
