Is this a good idea for the future

| im currently a sophmore in high school and ive been listenin to trance for like.2 years. i really want to be a DJ.. i think i have pretty good music talent.. like ive been playin guitar since 4th grade. Lately ive begun to play less often tho.. cuz of trance and everythin. but i played good stuff like spanish guitar. i have a friend who Dj's parties and ive gone with him 2 times. hes pretty good and i realyl want to be a DJ also.. this one teacher i had said that for a career i should do somethin i like and i want to be a DJ. I was wonderin is it hard to succeed as a DJ and can anyoen give me tips? I know im pretty well cut out for it because i have a pretty good memory when it comes to songs.. like i can name a song when hearing only like 3 seconds of it.. and when i listen to a live set i can tell when the Dj is mixing in another song. Maybe after highschool i can get a job and get equipment then go to college and DJ during college.. i mean i dont want to not go to college. not only will my mom kill be but if Djin fails i need somethin to fall back on. Can anyone help me out? tell me what path to take .. maybe youve been there. |

dood first of all your mom hands out good advice - listen to her and get a degree
secondly if u wanna learn stuff about electroni musak and in particular trance then u r in the right place :) just read all the different forums here and dl like every track and mix.
any more questions u have after that post em and u will more than likely get a reply. be nice to ppl and they will help u out.
apart from that check 2 c if there is a forum for near where u live and ask some local questions as some ppl there may be able to help u out with where to go look for gear, vinyl and woteva else
take it easy and curound like a fruit loop

| hehe i'm in highschool too (senior) i work ..but then my mom yells at me for using my money. I dont blame her i spent every penny i made hahaha. Oh man wait till i give her my w-2 or whatever that says how much i make. I was planning on djing for fun, i'm about to buy gemini xl500 from someone..2 of them of course..i got some records already. I hope it goes well. |

First of all your mom is right, get a degree! Because becoming a professional DJ is very hard these days. Everybody is DJ-ing!
The first thing u will have to do is practice untill you are at a certain level!
Then you should compete in DJ contests (If there are any) or try to get into a club as a DJ. Or a party organiser or something!
Then you should make your own songs, because else, nobody will know you exist!
These ar three very big steps and it is hard to get up there, very hard!

I am still in the first level! Untill i will have finished my school i will keep practicing at home! i did play at small parties though.
And may friends tell me i am really good (And they know the difference bettween a good and a bad dj):D

hey your mom is right go get your degree.. and in the meantime you can still fool around with djing =)
im a junior in college, i have a few friends that dj for frat parties and small clubs, and hey their doing all that while getting a college degree so its not like you cant do both.
i have a pair of numark 1510's which are cheap and crappy but hey you dont need great equipment to learn to be a great dj ;)
as for a career in djing. its like any other musical profession its hard to make a living. too much competition. think of how many people play guitar, and how many actually get up there and become rock stars or something.
i've played violin for about 14 yrs and theres no way i could compete professionally, but its still one of my favorite hobbies. |

| why would you need to start making your own music in order to be successful? i disagree... there's plenty of dj's out there that are big yet they've never produced anything... |

^^^ i actually think that you do need to be a good producer in order to be a well-recognized dj. i can't think of anyone that's strictly a dj and hasn't had a hand in producing or remixing something before they got really popular. i think by producing you get your name out there easier than just by djing. just my two cents. in fact, i heard that no one even gave a crap about sander kleinenberg until he put out my lexicon and then everyone starting paying him a little more respect. cheers!

| well the thing is, you DO NOT have to produce in order to become big... its just that, as your djing career progresses, you define your own style and you get ideas and you start producing music... still theres a lot of dj's that had never produced anything... scott bond and guy ornadel come to mind... |

okay, i dont mean to be a jerk, but like 90% of the well known djs HAVE produced a top tune.. its not neccessary, but it increases your odds of being recognized by a long shot.. |

Your Mom is right. It is very hard to make a living off of dj'ing. If it happens, it won't be without many years of clawing and scratching to get to that point.
Go to school for music...that way you get the best of both worlds!
