I blame the unions. Here in Michigan, they've crippled the auto industry - people getting paid 3x normal pay to work a Sunday???? *shakes head* At Delphi, one of the largest auto support companies, they just gave their folks an option - go from $30/hr to $15/hr or be replaced. They just cannot keep paying this exorbiant salaries now that car sales have plateaued.

it would be cool if Canada manufactures an all Canadian car :toocool:
I don't think they would "let them" though :conf:
btw, this German ford focus we have here seems good  |

You all seem convinced its largely due to quality of american cars. If you take care of a car properly it will last 30 years (noone really takes care of cars) my grandma still drives a 1967 chev, and that car just keeps going (but to be fair its only got 150,000 miles, and is in Victoria BC, so no snow)
They are going out of business because of their legacy costs, and all the promises they made to unionized employees 30-15 years ago. Doesnt $1,500 of every new ford/GM go directly to paying off pensions? |

In 2001 and 2002, Focus was the world’s best selling car. |
Says who?
I know since the late 90's the Camery has been the best selling car in NA. I know it is not the world, but...I just cannot believe the FOcus is the world's best selling car for that period. |

1. Democratic countries (and their governments) don't manufacture automobiles in an effort spurr nationalistic pride (most communist countries did however).
2. There were many Canadian auto makers: Brooks Steam, Redpath, Tudhope, McKay, Galt Gas-Electric, Gray-Dort, Brockville Atlas, C.C.M.. |

+1.
Besides, some of those models are rebadged Japanese cars, or they in the process of, or have already been discontinued. |

Unfortunatly it goes beyond just initial quaility.
The american themes have always been:
1) they will give you lots of features, even if they don't all work right and break down.
2) When the car breaks down, repairing will be cheap and easy.
The Japaneese always followed different rules:
1) They won't give you every feature under the sun, but things will work well.
2) If something breaks down, which is not often, it may be a little more expensive to fix, but it will happen less often.
The public got tired of the US bull. The US companies just took their segment of the market for granted, and believed that they would always have loyal consumers based on the fact that they are domestic.
unfortunatly this bad for Ontario as a whole. When this many jobs are taken away from any economy, everybody feels the pinch. THere is just less money as a whole to spend. Sales every where suffer. |
Actually I would switch that around.
The Japanese are the ones that give you lots of features and options. |

Please list the G8 public-ownership auto manufacturers. |

We can put the blame squarely on the UAW for this ******y, thanks to skyrocketing health care costs and the billions and billions GM must pay out to support their ex-employees.
Also bass drive, what't his about a German Ford Focus? |

You should see the billion dollar paint line that was just contructed in the Oshawa plant! Jobs cuts due to overspending and incorrect forcasts. If GM Oshawa ever closes, the entire Durham Region would be devastated!
Reason why I moved from the automotive industry: too much fluctuation in markets...people would rather keep their cell phones than their cars these days.
And comparitively, if you knew the amount of disorganization within GM and their suppliers, you would agree that domestic cars are not best sellers for a reason IMO... Not that I know anything about which car is selling the best in Canada... I just know I would not buy one myself... but I do drive a GM for work... |

| im sure the massive increase in business taxes that mcsquinty has implemented hasnt helped either. Not to mention the fact that the federal government withheld it's promised tax cuts to businesses promised last year in order to get into bed with the NDP to prop the government up over the summer. |
