Mac vs. PC - need advise...

Want to buy a laptop... I really love the slick and shiny 17" PB G4 but my reasonable side says get an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad instead... Obviously I've ammassed huge number of apps for every need on PC but Mac is an uncharted territory for me. I also plan to use it for light music recording (eg. studio) duty but not really sure if I should go mac or pc...

any suggestions from either camp?

im a PC guy but when it comes to laptops, i'd go for a PB in a minute!

anything "laptop" related you can do on a PB, its not like you are running a FTP off a mac or something. If at anything, a laptop would be used for music editing/recording and graphics which apple's handle in their sleep.

a pc will give you that universal feel but if you go portable, i say the PB handsdown

...well, theoretically, OS X is bsd-based underneath (DARWIN), so, you can run FTP on it (oh, and more securely than on PC, that's for sure).

one other thing to consider, apple is in the process of phasing out g4/g5 and moving to intel processors. pb prices have fallen on this news so you can either get a good deal now or hold out for intel. the ease in which apple software handles multimedia is sweet but if your already have pc software it be cheaper not to switch platforms.

Great point. I actually read about it. My thought is that eventually, apple will become another HW vendor like Dell, Alienware, etc that sells "boutique" hardware for those who have extra cash and probably even try to venture into OS market, to give MS run for its money. Tho, the thing I find most assinine about Mac OS is the absence of right-click. I do about 70% of tasks with the right click and not having it present and dealing with a single button drives me NUTS!

although I doubt they'd be able to fit a decent cpu in such a slim case and still retain power, feature, and heat disepation in such a small case.

I can get a PB G4 17" with:

100 MB HD
512 RAM
Combo Drive
Airport/bluetooth/gig E/modem

for $2000 + tax new

hate to take away you right-click petpeeve but under OSX right-click is enabled. I use it all the time. Part of the reason they're moving to intel is because g5 runs too hot for a laptop

I heard from a friend that the mac's with intel cpu's were up to 5 times faster than the ibm/motorola cpu's.

Get a PC.

Why?

Because I have nothing better to do.

I bet he was talking about some specific thing, I wasn't really listening that hard since I was doing my math assignment.. :p

The G4's are lousy at floating-point calculations though. They (friends) did a test consisting of prime factorization and when the mac was at 1% the PC had completed the task.

Just some stuff I get told. I've played around with some macs at uni and they are cool though. I still like my PC laptop though.
