| he would be the yanks 1st legit leadoff hitter since knoblauh which they need, he did have an off year but i think jeter would be better in the 2 hole anyway |

How about their first legit CF since...... DiMaggio? They have never really had a threat at CF. |

Say what? What the hell is Bernie Williams?
.305/.391/.535
.328/.408/.544
.339/.422/.575
.342/.435/.536
.307/.391/.566
.307/.395/.522
.333/.415/.493
What more could you want offensively out of your CF? |

Its not the offense, its the defense. When teams play the Yankees, being on 2nd base, is just as good as being on 3rd on a single to CF. |

And Bernie Williams was an above average defender in CF for a while...
And Juan Pierre is NOT all he's cracked up to be defensively. Sure, he's fast. But he's no Beltran/Cameron/Kotsay out there. |

Alas I make my return with more baseball talk...
Unless you're getting a good defensive CF who puts up offensive numbers comparing to Derek Jeter, then I just prefer Jeter leading off. Look at the comparison between Johnny Damon (considered the prototypical leadoff hitter):
Runs Walks OBP SLG OPS
Jeter 119 71 .391 .445 .846
Damon 115 52 .367 .441 .805
Juan Pierre had an OBP of .320. Bleh. And his arm is just as weak as Bernie Williams. Which is stronger than Johnny Damon's. Having watched 40 Yankee games in person (mostly in RF bleachers), I don't want to have to painfully watch balls roll into the cutoff man from CF. I just don't. Yanks never had any real interest in Pierre and I'm happy about that.
A guy like Aaron Rowand would have been perfect if the Phillies didn't steal him away already.
I might be the only Yankee fan who isn't bothered by the slow activity of this offseason. Better than signing free agent busts for a lot of money who you later can't trade. Looking at the Red Sux of dumping Edgar Renteria. Look at Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright, the two big free agent acquisitions. There isn't a lot of good free agents this year and the Yanks really only want a CF and bullpen guys.
It's a nice change of pace where the Yankees just don't chase the tail of the moves that the Red Sux and the Mets make. I honestly can say that it looks at though Cashman is really controlling the ship this offseason and I'm quite happy about that.
I want a CF to play defense cuz Sheff and Matsui need a guy that will "steal" balls from them (cuz they are both below average fielders). |

I disagree here. I think the Yankees/Steinbrenner are finally seeing that the 200$M payroll isn't working to well. It may have started last year with not signing Carlos Beltran. Think about it. They knew they would need a CF. The premier FA last year was a CF. And they didn't get him. Just a thought... |
