As Toronto gets ready to face another long – and very frigid – winter, one local business is taking advantage of the weather to literally make some cold cash.
Welcome to the Ice Lounge, the world’s largest bar made entirely of, yes, ice. And they do mean entirely.
“Our tables, our bar, our glasses, our walls – all ice,” proclaims Nick Di Donato of the Liberty Group C Lounge. About the only thing that’s not flash frozen are the people who serve you the drinks.
But it’s not really like they’re building a better igloo – just using the space that formerly held sun worshipping customers. The frozen fortress is being built in the rear patio of the C Lounge at 456 Wellington St. W.
Still confused? Everything will quickly become ‘crystal clear’. “Our special ice … is made in tanks that circulate the water as it’s freezing,” explains Heidi Bailey of Ice Culture. “And that pushes the air out and makes it crystal clear.”
But with the up and down November temperatures, how do they ensure their assets stay frozen? “Ninety B.T.U.s of cooling, creating this environment, insulating it all and insuring that it doesn’t melt,” outlines Donato.
Customers will be given a parka and a pair of gloves when they go in.
Those behind the concept are sure you’ll warm to the idea – although they’d rather you not do that inside.
“It’s something so … unique to the city of Toronto, in that … sometimes winter can be a bit drab,” concludes Bailey. “We’re trying to bring … a little trendiness to it and a lot of fun.”
The bar has its official house warming – or should that be house cooling? – on November 22nd.

nothing like having to pour the shot directly into your mouth for fear of gettng your lips stuck to the friggin glass.. hahaha :p |
