Cold snap to bring blizzards this week Wednesday November 23, 02:50

LONDON (Reuters) - Snow and blizzards will hit most of the country on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures hovering above zero and feeling colder from the effect of icy winds, the Meteorological Office said on Wednesday.

"This will be our first taste of proper winter weather this year," said a Met Office spokesman, and follows one of the mildest Octobers on record.

Forecasters are predicting this could be the coldest winter in a decade but the government insisted the severe weather would not cause any shortages of public gas supplies.

The cold snap will hit northern Scotland early on Thursday, reaching southern England overnight Thursday and on Friday morning.

Northern and eastern Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to get the most snow and could be hit by severe gale force winds, while the southeast's chance of snowfall is put at around 30 percent.

Maximum daytime temperatures will be around 4 to 5 degrees centigrade (40 F) with high winds making it feel colder. Overnight temperatures will fall below freezing.

Higher ground is most at risk of snow, which could settle up to a depth of 20 cm, but milder weather over the weekend is expected to melt away most of the snowfall.

Only problem is the tread on my tyres aren't great! :(

Pfft...they've been saying "this winter is going to be the worst for a long time" for the past 3 years and we're yet to see anything bad.

Being a person who works for a living outside I can safely tell you all that this year has been exceptionally different from previous years.
This summer has been the best, and until just 2 weeks ago we were ahead of work and hadn't had any problems as concerns weather.
Yet this past 2 weeks I've been in literal pain from how cold the mornings are.
Its the quickest I has seen the weather change,in a matter of one day the temperature at noon dropped 15degree's and hasnt risen by much since.(meaning 2 tuesdays ago the temp at noon was 19degree's and 2days after it was 4)
Seen very icey roads and work is beginning to get dangerous.

Bring on the snow though as I am on holiday in 15days :D

Well honestly I can't see anything exceptional....though that may be just because I'm in the South East now and the weather here is damned soft compared to where I used to be:p

Yeah probably.
When I wa s achild we had a foot of snow each year, but for the past 8-9 years we've not had a real winter for where I live.
You'll have higher expectations for good winters coming from Scotland.

As far as I can tell, I'll be lucky to see a bit of sleet here let alone enough snow to cover the ground. Perhaps I should invest in a snow machine so I don't have to rely on the British weather to deliver some.

Be nice to get some boarding done locally instead of having to fly somewhere. I was meaning to buy some cold wax today after hearing about this weather, but completely forgot.

Kindly utilise some magic powers (or build some sort of weather machine) to send snow this way, thanks.
