Compressing Bass and Kick together using Reason

Hi guys,

Just wondering how the best way to go about compressing bass and kick in reason together is? I am thinking by pluggins both devices into a 6:2 mixer and then taking the output from the mixer and running it through the compressor and outputting that to my main mixer... Am I correct or is there a better way? Is there anything I should keep in mind when doing this?

Cheers guys...

You're talking about sidechaining. The MClass unit in Reason 3 has a sidechain input that does just that - set the MClass on your bassline and insert a copy of your kick (use the Spider splitter) into the sidechain input and have fun.

Reason 2.5's compressors are piss weak and don't have a sidechain input. The closest way around it is to use the left channel of the compressor for audio only, and use the right as the sidechain input.

Oh and btw, I remember talking about this a few weeks ago.....see if this thread is of any help :)

Umm I dont think I was talking about side chaining.... I have just read and found that it works well to send the bass and kick to there own bus and then compress them together... I could be wrong though but i thought that taking the outputs from the mixer and then compressing would be like setting up a bus in logic.

I just read that thread... intresting it seems both ways are mentioned however when i bus the kick and bass together and then compress the mixer output I find that I get the same pumping effect on the bassline... cant really see what teh difference between this and sidechaining is... except that the original kick may remain intact....

You're compressing the signal too hard...

Sidechain controlls the sidechain input normally your bass.. when the kick hits he will compress the bass a little so that the kick will pound harder so that they are not sounding the same time.

I'm pretty sure the standard procedure for most producers is to sidechain so that the kick can punch harder in comparison to the bass, then compress them together to ensure that no clipping occurs from their sum.

That's what I do, at least, and no one complains. Just be sure that when you do this, you EQ both instruments very tightly so that they don't interfere with each other, which can make the compressed bus sound really muddy and ugly.

Thanks for the food for thought guys...

A good tip:

Check out www.reasonstation.com and click for refills. Set the search for ROUTINGS, and look for a routing called sidechain. With this RSN file you can see exactly how you can create a sidechain and how it works. succes!
