Ive checked on the sticky thread and did a search and nothing came up, sooo...

I read on another forum that people were getting into for remixing tracks without authorization.
so to anyone who has had a remix authorized before, could you let the rest of us know how you went about getting it ok.ed as to emailing the label or whateva blah blah..

thanks :).

of course you're going to get into if you take someones material and use it without permission... and what do you mean getting it 'ok'ed?
are you planning to release the remix for commercial use...use it on an album.....?

Almost nobody minds a remix of their track, it's extra puplicity in a way and doesn't cost them anything.

He means that the label will release it together with the original for instance.

I know this happened with Passiva/Galen Behr/Ava mea. He made a remix of Ferry Corsten - Indigo a few years ago and sent it to the label, they got back in touch with him saying they would release it, it was his first pro release :D. Weird things happen :)

If you send your remix to the original label they may be more lenient... you are, after all, offering them the rights to your remix, and if it's released by the same label that released the original then there's no copyright infringement.

However, if you plan on trying to release your mix elsewhere, or make money off of it some other way, OR have it broadcast in any way or form, you WILL have to get it cleared. Just e-mail the label and ask for permission (and as mentioned, the most practical thing to do in that case is ask if they want it on their label).

A bit off topic, but the song for the current acid remix contest makes a good vocal trance track. I noticed in the contest rules though, that when the contest is over you cannot use the samples anymore for your own personal use, at all, you must delete them. OK, I understand why and all, but seems to me the artist and lable would want the remixes to continue to be circulated for promotional purposes. Obviously this is not the case. I see it said here that most artists don't mind people distributing remixes (even ones offered for free) of their material. Seems a bit presumptuous to me. Even if the artists doesn't mind, the label probably will. Distributing any portion of copyrighted material, even for free, is illegal anyway.

Sending a label a remix of their own artists is an interesting thought. Yeah, I guess maybe they would be more flattered than anything. Since you are sending their own material back to them, and not distributing it to the public, seems there's no harm done. The odds of them accepting your remix for publication are going to be slim and none though. It's worth a shot though. Hey, why not? I suppose if you are a real pro, and have made a name for yourself, you might even be handed the individual tracks for remix. We can always dream can't we.
