...that everyone's been hammering lately. is that just a distorted bass of some sort that's been layered... or is it a certain buzzing sample or something?

uhhh... variations of the sound i'm looking for are in tracks like

16bit lolitas - between u
acquaviva - zombie
pryda - aftermath

also, i'm looking for a few suggestions on a good strings vst... i was kinda looking at edirol orchestral but i don't know if that's what i'm looking for.

thanks fellas

Well it's obviously not THAT simple - as with any subtractive synth sound there is probably going to be some filtering, perhaps detuning, LFOs, envelopes, etc. But much of the "electro-ish" sound does come from squares, just as much of the "trancey" sound comes from saws.

There are also old school synths like the MS10 as mentioned above... and there are also the drums on the TR-808, which are still used a lot for electro.

Maybe you'd get a better answer if you posted a sample of something specific.

Have u tried reFX Vanguard? I think it has some pretty electro sounds... however I'm not sure, since I haven't used it in a while

here's a link to a sample of pryda - aftermath, courtesy of juno right click, save as (it's about 30 seconds in or so)

to me, it just sounds like a bassline with square waves thrown on top of it.. but then again it's hard for me to think of it in an EDM producer perspective.. i'm more of a guitarist myself.

thanks for the input you guys
