Hey Richy
Well pretty much everything that needed to be said, has been said.
Sounds Old School alright, but if you intended it I think your approach is really accurate.
It's got a cool bassline let me give you that, and synths are good as well, some percussions need to be changed (cowbells  ) some need better eqing. Just remember the only elements needed by the 200 Hz and bellow are the Kick and the Bassline. So even if your hi hat (in this case you need one, that drives the track) is obviously above that mark naturally, eq down 200 Hz and bellow on it anyways, and so do the same thing to every element that is not a kick or bassline.
If you think that your synths lost their warm feel because of this, then eq down from 150 Hz and bellow (on the synths)
Even if they don't look like it, their low frequencies add up to a bad final sounding.
Try to pan some sounds to right and left, and leave the important ones in the middle (Kick , Bassline , Off Beat Hi Hat , Main Synth).
For atmospherics you could use a good widener.
After you do a good mixing, mastering shouldn't be much of an issue if you have some knowledge. But this definately needs to sound better.

hey ricky and paulo:)
thanks for checkin my tune.
your points are very much appriciated!
ricky: im concentrating on percs on my new track more. thanks for your kind words about everything else in the track.
paulo: thanks for the advise in eqing parts. i usually dont apply attenuation of eq to my main synths or anything. just boost certain frequencies till they sound right to me...
ill apply some cut to <200hz of all tracks except kick and bass on my track im working on at the moment. i have also started using more hi hats on it and its made the track much more driving than this and my previous tracks. ill also play around with the panning of some of the parts/effects.
cheers again!

Hey rich, thanks for your review on my tune. So here comes mine in return :)
commenting as I listen...
- nice variation on the beat. The groove is interesting. It's not really driving, but definately interesting and very elaborate.
- I dont really like the cymbal thing on the beat.
- nice oldschool synths. They sound really, uhm, oldschool. Good job in reproducing the feeling of the "original" analog synthies. Some might say that sounds too silly nowadays, but I know it was your intention to make a sound like that, and I think any lover of oldschool analog synth sounds will dig them.
- the bass is really warm, and sits well in the mix. Good!
- great layering then. All the sounds work absolutely well together.
- I think the mastering is good too. I didnt have a look on the spectrum, but just judging by ear, this sounds nice and well balanced.
- Maybe you should add a little more variation. Another theme with a different synth for example. In the long run, it gets kinda repetitive.
All in all, a very interesting and refreshing tune. It seems you spent a load of time on it. Good job, keep it up! |

cheers cyber'desire'....:)
thanx for listening and for making some comments.
i gotto admit it wasnt my aim to go for an oldscholl sound. more of a drunken fumble of synth keys:) non driving is probably the best way to describe my stuff! cymbal mirroring the kick i thought worked well. sounds like 'alter ego' rocker but i like that i think..
silly is also a word that works well in describing the piece. it is really fun-fair ish in sound imo. i think it because i am attempting a uk top 40 hit with a track me and a friend are producin at the mo. its r+b style with a 'black eyed peas' style about it.
cheers for the comments about the overall sound and the mastering. im glad it sounds good to you. bass is something i have grown to love also:)
repetetive is a word i feel fits with this one. and your points about variing the theme with anothe synth melody sound like a good idea.
great you found it refreshing and it sounded like a lot of work went into it! i have tweeked it a bit.. but most of the work i did was when i was drunk!
cheers for checking.
rich:)
ps. my friend loved your psy track!:) |

As always nice work.
Actually managed to squeeze this into a set I did on local radio (forgot to mention that to you) recently.
As stated perhaps the cowbells sit little too high in the mix but other than that I like it.
If I had to categorize this in any way I would have to say that it reminds me a little of daftpunk, perhaps it's just the chord progression but it does.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers

| Nice and original track. I like the retrosound and synths, it sounds a bit like older JMJ stuf (well his more weird stuf i mean:) and that's a compliment;) ). Overall a creative electronic track with a good ambiance, nice melodies and sounds (allthough i must admit that the cowbells are a bit misplaced imo). The mastering sounds not that bad btw, good job on that. |

thanks for checkin guys:)
karl - glad you enjoyed mate. and im very pleased you put it in a slot of yours:) what sort of set was it placed in? which tracks in between? did you record the set? id love to hear it! even at 64kbps..
i love daft punk so thats quite a nice comment. i suppose they make use of a lot of retro synths.
im workin on a non cowbell version now and am uploading to yousendit right now. its rough but gives an idea of how it should sound.
cheers mate!
romi - thanks ron.
im glad you liked the ambience and melodies:) and it pleases me that you found the mastering ok:)
as for the cowbells lol.. im sorting them a bit. i have lowered the volume of them and applied a bit of effects to tone em down..
thanks again guys

Can't remember what I mixed it into but I do remember that I mixed the drill - the drill into it. Had to use master tempo on the CDJ though as your track is faster by quite a bit. The speed difference put it out of key (Am).
My friend recorded the set so I will see if I can get a copy for you.
Cheers

I hope the first is the updated version... (title says so, me thinks)
Original synth-use here. Sound at 1:20 = weird but nice. Break left me a bit in doubt, if it's not to long. Synths seem to be in like "tiny" style. I like that! Part @ 4:00 is too empty, IMO. Perhaps giving that lead some reverb would do great. I like how the song continues from there, though.
I guess you're still working on it. So am I, so check out if you'd like. Good luck with it,

cheers for your comments webs
i know what you mean about a bit of reverb on the main dry synth. i did apply a bit but it made the track lose its retro sound.. im using the synth at the moment on another piece im doing but have applied reverb to it and it sounds good:)
comments much appreiciated buddy:)
