For the Lazy People...

quote:
So last night my moms boyfriend came over with some gear to see what might be going on. So we hooked up the tables to the ty Gemini PMX40 mixer I have and to no surprise nothing happened. Funny thing is, when I unground the tables from that mixer, the lights go all the way up on the mixer. We also noticed that messing around with the power cable to the mixer kinda makes the lights move around from none to all as well. I really believe this mixer is shot to hell.

So then, we hooked up the tables to his mixer. Now, this thing is ancient and isnt really created for turntable hookup, but you can do it. So we hooked the tables up to it and grounded the tables to the Gemini mixer. Nothing. We then hooked up a small boombox to the mixer and popped in a cd and it fired up. So its not the speakers and not my sterio system. Finally hooked back up the tables and you could FAINTLY hear the record playing through the speakers but just barely and that was it.

Now, I could easily say the tables dont work. Thing is, when I went to buy them from the guy who sold them to me, he had them working. We were throwing different records on there for a good 20 minutes. So I cant see how he could have demo'ed them for me with a trick and then I simply can't get them to work.

If anyone has some suggestions PLEASE help me out. Also, I live in the Philly area (Conshohocken) so if anyone lives around that area I'm hoping maybe we could meet up somewhere and possibly hook up another mixer or something to them to see if that is the problem or any other ideas... Thanks!.

This is really weird... maybe needles? I dont know?

Make sure its connected to the PHONO inputs on your mixer.. those both seem like basic suggestions..

Call the guy who sold it to you?

Im at a loss..

Sorry. :(

So if you connect the turntables you can hear something, but not much?

Is the channel set to phono mode? Are you sure that the connections at the back are ok?

Yeah, I had the mixer set to phono. I checked out the connectors and all and nothing is rusty or dirty. Like I said, it very well could be the mixer but then again, it might not be. I guess the ONLY way to know for sure is to get a mixer that I know damn well works and hook them up. But its tough when you are the only one out of your friends that is even remotely interested in this stuff.
