Copied from my review on tribe.ca

What an odd sort of night.
Made it to stereobar by about 2 - Im still not sure who was playing, but the tunes were sort of upbeat electro house I guess you could call it. Stereobar is a really neat addition for an after hours that isnt able to serve alcohol.

We went upstairs around 3 and heard Romeo Cardec til about 4:30 when Barbara came on. Romeo was playing a bit on the pitched up diva electro vocal tip and while it was fun at first, not something I would enjoy listening to for more than an hour.

Babs came on and started off her set with some more of the popular electro-house going around - playing Cirez D and that kind of thing. I was encouraged for the rest of the night since Im really into this sound right now. Maybe after an hour or so of that, though, she started delving into more minimal and dark, brooding...progressive!! Maybe it wasnt prog, I dont know, but I remember thinking over and over *she really needs to pick this up a bit* and this is one thing I have never thought about her sets! She always has the music pitched up...but I felt like we werent even close to hitting 130bpm.

She played zero techno which I figured might happen but was still disappointing to me. but its her bday...she can do what she wants to! (I also heard she was playing for free bc she approached Stereo to book her and they said no initially)

She played from 430-11 which is a long enough set that I would have hoped she would have varied the music a bit more. However, my disappointment could have been much greater if it werent for the ing sound system!!! NOW I know what everyone is talking about. Being able to hear the fine details of those tracks - details that would normally get lost in the distortion - kept things really interesting for me. At times I remember remarking to someone, *where does she find these records!!!* She was definitely showcasing a more eclectic side of her music collection.

I will definitely head back to stereo again.

You know, I re-read that review and it sounds like I had a bad time, but I didnt. I stayed til the last track finished! and I really enjoy her new style most of the time, I just thought Friday nights set wasnt upbeat enough for me.

Its ok skipper!

I guest ,it's depend of your music taste.

In the futur, everybody need to know that misstress barbara won't just play techno.

Misstress barbara = Techno,electro,electrohouse,acidhouse,minimal,groovy beats! :D

who was there also? more review or the night, please!!
Skipper
I have supported barbara for years and always will, because I respect her as an artist, but I did not think she was playing groovy on Friday night. She was not reading the crowd at all. At 8am at stereo, people do not really want to hear downtempo minimal techno...they wanted to hear something pumping!!

How was Romeo's set, Skipp?

I went to see The Misstress essentially so my cousin (who LOVES her) wouldn't go alone even though I was very curious about this night myself. Plus I hadn't been to Stereo since Luke Fair. I wanted to hit it up at Aria for Nick and a bit of Chris then I was thinking of going to Circus for Big Al (he's REALLY, and I mean REALLY good)...

Well, for people who enjoy her music, she killed it. As a DJ, she's awesome as well. I think the highlight of my night was just seeing how into her mix and how into the crowd she was...That always makes me happy even if the music isn't exactly my taste...

The first 2 hours were SIIIICK then it got too hard for me (what can I say? I'm a housey kinda girl) and her transitions just became overly long nor were there enough huge drops in her songs.

Her performance was totally contrary to her reputation...Even though I only saw ONE person go into that DJ booth and he was escorted out shortly thereafter...let's say 2 minutes tops?

But, that's cool with me...she can do what she wants. It WAS her birthday. Overall, slamming DJ, not-so slamming night.

Highlights of my night songwise:
1) Yoshimoto - Du Wut U Du :D
2) James Holden remix - The Sky Was Pink :eyespop:
3) Tiga remix - Washing Up
4) That song with the heavy disco organ...OMG, so good...

PS: Is it really true that she spun for free?! Heard something on another post about her having asked to spin, Stereo said no so she said she'd do it for free...If this is true, then it proves how much good DJs love Stereo's sound system.

Til next weekend...SATOSHIIIIIII AHHHHHH :toocool:

I think the highlight of her set was when she played Dammelo (a track she produced and included on relentless beats 1 years ago).

Is that the one with the craaaazzy dark bass line and the tribal beats? That's an amazing song, if that's the one.

Yeah, all in all, Barbara was excellent...put some outstanding tracks and kept me dancing for a good 3 hours.

Um....that could be a whole bunch of tracks.
She didn't play very much tribal at all.

It has her own vocal looping throughout the song: "Dammelo...si..." and some other Italian words meaning "yes, I like it like that" etc etc.
