When a kid grabs his dads shotgun then goes onto a busy street and fires off a few rounds at cars all because he did the same thing when playing GTA (or any other videogame).
Im not sure if videogames are entirely to blame. I think it comes down to the responsibility of the parents/guardians to watch over their childern & teach them whats right & wrong. Kids should be taught that what they watch on tv or play in a videogame is just fantasy and should never be attempted in real life.
The parents just dont want to blame themselves for their parenting failure.
But I do agree with the idea that "M rated" games should only be sold to those 18+(or was it 19?). Just like R rated movies.

That's why I've mainly stuck with Nintendo. They get labelled as a company for kids, but there's actually a lot of very entertaining games on their systems. Sorta like Disney and Pixar make movies for everybody, the same is with Nintendo. Look at Metroid Prime (which is one of the best games ever created, imo), or Eternal Darkness. These types of games are NOT for kids, but are still extremely good and entertaining.
The Playstation has had it's share of good games too though; don't get me wrong. But Sony's philosophy has been, and will be, "quantity over quality". For every Metal Gear Solid 3 or ICO, there's 20 "me-too" games.
And now you have Microsoft, who really are catering to the MTV generation. People who think video gaming started just recently, and it's the "cool" thing to do. I've yet to see one game that breaks new ground on the Xbox (and no, "dual-wielding" in Halo 2 doesn't break new ground. It's just a cool feature that's been in numerous other FPS games).
The reason why I'm looking forward to Nintendo's "Revolution" is because they're truly taking gaming to the next level. Finally some life in this stale industry. Just thinking about playing games that I'd never touch normally intrigues me, because of this new controller. |

The XBox, both old and new, feature a parental locking system so that their child cannot play an M-Rated game on their console. The new Nintendo console will feature that as well.
How many parents do you think know about this? |

| I'm not sure who came first but the level of open ended play IMO is better in Elder Scrolls3: Morrowind. Also gets better with the 2 add ons. |

Smart move, I'd probably have gotten a lot more value out of a GC than the PS2. I think I'll pass on the Xbox 360 - I don't need yet another Windows box in my house that crashes all the time. :rolleyes: |

There is one game I have been playing since I was 12 years old.
Civilization I-- and I have played every version ever since.
Civilization II
Civilization II:Gold
Civilization : Call to Power
Civilization III
and finally Civilization IV has been just recently released. Pure strategy, its still one of those games that one has to actually think. |

| 18+ is waaay too much for M rated games. I agree little kids shouldn't be playing GTA, but by the time I got to high school I think I figured out real life != video game. |

This is why I only bought the Gamecube. It's got the most interesting games, and sadly, a ton of them get overlooked because they're so innovative that few people want to try them. Stuff like Metroid Prime 1 & 2, Eternal Darkness (AMAZING GAME! A TRUE GEM! THEY ACTUALLY PATENTED THE SANITY METER), RE4, etc. F-Zero GX is my favourite racing game of all time too... it doesn't try to be real at all, and that's what makes it good. Prince of Persia did some very innovative things for platform adventures (namely the ability to reverse time) and there are tons and tons of other really innovative titles that don't get the credit they deserve. Stuff like Pikmin, Viewtiful Joe, even DK Jungle Beat (which is NOT DONKEY KONGA!! Donkey Konga is DDR with Bongo Drums... DK Jungle Beat is an action/sidescroller platform game that uses bongos instead of a controller, which is a lot of fun.) Another very very excellent game that got totally overlooked is Beyond Good and Evil. I played through about 2/3 of that game when I borrowed it from my brother's girlfriend... I was really sad when my brother broke up with her and he had to give it back :(.
I'm so glad I went Gamecube. I eventually bought a PS2 once they got cheaper, mainly because I wanted to buy a DVD player anyway, and other than that, the only game I really play on it is DDR (yea, so what, I play DDR...) But yea... gamecube was the way to go.
I have got a few friends who are addicted to Civ 4, but I'm not so much into those type of games... maybe I'll have some time this winter to try it. I really want to try the Shadow of a Colossus game though... it looks very different. I read a good review about the King Kong game as well (finally, a movie game that was done very very well) but apparently it can be finished in about 10-12 hours, so I might just rent it and blow through it in a weekend.
And GTA is fun for an afternoon, but really not that interesting of a game to me. It has so little focus... so much to do but not much motivation to do it. Not the kinda game I'm that interested in. Maybe if the AI was really realistic and there were a few more layers.
Anybody have some good suggestions on games to blow my christmas money on? I've got Prince of Persia 3 on that list for sure... |

^When I have the moola, going to get my branches on Raw vs Smackdown 2 and SSX 4. Too bad SSX went from house to rock soundtrack, which IMO was a key point to the series.
Civilization > all other games. (Avoid activision junk though)
Mario Party and Super Smash Bros = best party game ever. Esp. 99 lives Smash Bros. |

Ezekiel brought up many good points in his post, but I think the real emphasis here is that we're all old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. But many kids don't, and this is the targeted demographic.
It's really sad that 50 cent takes pride in promoting himself as a thug. Yes, it's all PR but it's kind of difficult for teenagers of really impoverished ghettos to process reality and fiction. In fact, I come from an middle to upper class anglophone suburb in montreal where so much violence has grown, possibly out of boredom. I pretty much come from the breakfast club days of petty bullying. When my younger sister of five years went to school she would recount stories of people being stabbed in the courtyard! stabbed! because someone gave them a dirty look, or something petty.
I also am familiar with these areas in the US. Some high schools don't even have heating or functional classrooms, let alone afford current curriculum.
I think it would be great if these rappers could at least attempt at not promoting rape, assault, murder, and "oh it's so cool that my claim to fame relies on the fact that I was a crack dealer, so you become a crack dealer and you'll make it too!"
sorry, I'm a a little sensitive about this subject.
Unfortunately prohibitive age laws don't work. Kids will still play these games and watch these awful movies and live vicariously through 50 cent and DMX... |

The real question is....are some of these M rated games under rated. Have a rating system similar to movies. Games like GTA and 50 cents game should probably have a higher rating then M. I would suggest a system such as:
F - family...safe for all ages
T - Teen - 14 + (games with unrealistic violence)
M - Mature - 16 + (games with violence, language)
A - Adult - 18+ (games with realistic violence, nudity, sexual themes) |
