Temporary Autonomous Zones, EDM and Anarchism

In EDM related media there are alot of references to this "Temporary Autonomous Zone" essay ( You can read the full text for yourself at http://www.hermetic.com/bey/taz_cont.html ). The most recent one which inspired me to do this thread was Ishkur's trancecracker cartoon:

http://www.ishkur.com/articles/trancecracker.php

Some other places I have seen TAZ references:
"The Politics of Rave" - http://archives.thedaily.washington...02695/rave.html
hyperreal history - http://www.hyperreal.org/info/history.html
hyperreal archives - http://www.hyperreal.org/raves/spir...TAZ_to_PAZ.html
technoccult - http://www.technoccult.com/archives...mous_zones.html
and finallay here is a huge page about it on a very fun website:
http://fusionanomaly.net/taz.html

What makes me curious about all this is what people who aren't EDM fans think of the Temporary Autonomous Zone. Outside of EDM TAZ is looked at as one of the essential pieces of reading for anarchists. Anarchists are an interesting bunch but it surprises me that ravers and anarchists have a connection. Here is a quote that sums up the anarchist ideals decently:

quote:
"[i]n common with all socialists, the anarchists hold that the private ownership of land, capital, and machinery has had its time; that it is condemned to disappear: and that all requisites for production must, and will, become the common property of society, and be managed in common by the producers of wealth. And. . . they maintain that the ideal of the political organisation of society is a condition of things where the functions of government are reduced to minimum. . . [and] that the ultimate aim of society is the reduction of the functions of government to nil -- that is, to a society without government, to an-archy" [Peter Kropotkin, Op. Cit., p. 46]

In all the parties I have ever been to I have never met any people who think this way. So I am curious if the original ravers were actually anarchists or not. Are any of you kids anarchists? Most of the ravers I meet are hypercapitalists, huge fans of the status quo mass-consumption world. I am a bit curious how prevalent anarchist thought was in the early days of raving, and what happened that caused it to go away?

I barely meet any anti capitalists where I live, I find the anti-iauthroity types occasionally but they are quite rare. Perhaps the government crackdowns were aimed at removing all the anarchy parties and leaving the docile club events alone, or maybe there weren't really that many raving anarchists to being with.

I am really curious what you all think about Temporary Autonomous Zones and anarchy, somebody please answer some of my questions or say something interesting and semi on-topic.

Google Spiral Tribe. Not really the first of the rave outlaws, but certainly the most notorious.

One thing to bare in mind is 'rave rebellion' tends to be quite different from country to country, depending on what the policies of the majority populace want.

Well this sure is exciting, my searching for spiral tribe has led me to all sorts of crazy web sites that I have never seen before and pages centered around things I have only heard rumors about. One particularly interesting find has been this "reclaim the streets" group that appears to be a terrorist organization now, yikes.

Those sites have some crazy stuff related to TAZ and free parties and traveling sound systems and such. I haven't found any of these kinds of things that are within driving distance for me unfortunately, but I have seen enough to want to experience one of these events. Have any of you ever been to one of these freetekno traveling party things? I had no idea my curiosity about anarchists would reveal such interesting stuff, underground web pages and leet speak galore, crazy pages about mp3s and drugs and stuff. It has made me even more curious, I want to find more of these kind of websites, I want to find some of the music that these people listen to as well(so far I've only found dead links to music). Alot of these pages look out of date, are there new ones with similar topics floating around anywhere?

in israel the 'rebellion' has always been centered around psytrance, since the begining and even now... you'll find the other edm genres in the clubs, and you'll find some big-ass psytrance festivals, but there's always a looming underground of psytrance promoters who can set up a party in a night's notice with a budget between $50 and $300 (myself included, though i've neglected that scene long ago), always secretive, friends only (and friends of friends, and their friends, and their friends...), and always involving a lot of drugs (at least 70% of all the party goers), though not necessarily from the promoter's direction.

And?

Man...this TAZ thing sounds neat. So if my house was a TAZ there'd be a guy humping a cow in one corner, a guy killing a cow in another corner, and a guy throwing ground beef at everyone in another corner. Meanwhile i'm on my raised platform behind plexiglass, shooting at everyone with a custom gatling-pellet gun I built specifically for my crazy TAZ parties. Sweeeeet.

radagast are you trying to say something in a slick sarcastic way?

I haven't really found any stuff on the internet for free events or the people involved in making them happen anywhere around the southeast USA unfortunately. The overwhelming majority of EDM releated things on the net (other then that one ring of sites which I posted previously) are for commercial events in regular clubs, but I am just dying to see what is so special about one of these autonomous zone parties, the sites I am finding make them seem like they are crazy experiences. Somebody from America plase speak up! I have been to many club events, also been to a bunch of house parties but I have never really seen a noncommercial tazlike wild party before. There is a psytrance group that is close but isn't quite as radical as the sites I am stumbling upon today.

There is no exciting looming underground where I am it seems, there is just a bunch of DnB kids throwing parties at the local bars and clubs. I am willing to spend up to 5 hours driving to find something a bit more exciting though, something more exciting than the big clubs in Washington DC or Atlanta preferably.

if the nature of the underground party scene is the same there as it is here, i wouldnt hold my breathe waiting for someone to tell me about em here, on a forum of 50k+ members.

the underground doesnt look for people, people look for the underground, and you'd be very lucky to find it here.
Ishkur
The underground is not something that comes to you. You must go to it.

And to be underground is to be in a state of constant digging.

Catch us if you can.

This "underground" you speak of sounds like a bunch of elitists pricks who gather and do stuff that's secret and closed to feel special. Kind of like goth-punk-emos who dress black.
