i'm not saying that music hasn't changed at all, but i think it's been there a lot longer than people think... |
And I am not saying that you will never find a song a couple years ago that doesn't sound similar to one today. But the sound you hear today is more common then that one tune you heard 4 years ago. ;) |

yeah i agree...i mean obviously there is a lot more of certain sounds around today because people are producing them more, but i'm just saying that "trance" with techier sounds...or house with the new funky buzzy sound...these aren't new in 2005...just the popularity has risen. i've been searching out exactly these kinda tunes from the last 4-5 years and you'd be surprised there has been a lot...it's just nothing we've heard of before because it wasn't mainstream...and we wouldn't have known about it unless we followed the labels and artists that carried it...
but anyway...no real point arguing about this because it sounds like we both like the diversity... |

Oh yes I definitely agreee, trance has evolved.
In its first incarnation, trance was a fairly normal thing, innocent, naive, young, and impressionable:

Then, in its first evolution, trance became bigger and more powerful. It started to have an attitude and self-posession about itsef that was only exemplified by its new gypsy earring:

Finally, in the last evolution, things just went completely even more overboard. All the bad things about trance just got bigger, including its caveman brow. It was simply, the biggest, most powerful, most self-posessed, overblown nonsense you've ever seen:

I estimate trance at a power level of.....*eyeglass power level reader shatters*....IT'S OFF THE CHARTS!!! ERRRGHH...EUHGGGGG.....AAAHHHHHH........EERRRRMMM......ECHHH....Uhhhhhhh...I think I just shat me puffy MC Hammer pants. |

| trance is less melodic because the artist is not as creative as they were before. now any moron can get signed, and any moron can dj, there's no need for a clue about music anymore (on the dj part). |

I posted something about this in the "Why trance is going down the pan" thread. Trance has evolved, you just need to know where to look and who to look for. Sure there are still the same stereotypical trance riffs that on a personal basis feel they get annoying and over used and that there needs to be more varied sounds, including sounds that are more natural or organic sounding. There already is stuff like this such as stuff by Mark Otten, Hydroid, Alucard or Kalafut & Fygle. I think his sound should be the sound to emulate bringing trance into the future, and I think some producers are starting to catch on. A similar formula should be used, the build up, break down, build up, because that is what has made trance so successful (Why else would trance have been as successful as it has been when these types of sounds were made big in 98 and 99?) but trance now is sounding and should sound emotional and beautiful without being so overtly theatrical or grandiose. Mark Otten does this very well.
Compare songs such as "El Nino" by Agnelli & Nelson, "Carte Blanche" by Veracocha or "I Believe" by Lange, or songs like that, to "Tranqulity" "Mushroom Therapy" or "So Serene, or even stuff from other artists like "Time To Say Goobye" by Envio, "3579 KM" by Kalafut & Fygle or "Blue Tubes" by Hydroid, and you'll see the influence but you'll also see how it has progressed, whether you like the new sound or not. There are still "epic" tunes or "Anthems", "Time To Say Goodbye" is an example of a combination of both the deeper aspect of the newer trance stuff with the grandiose sounds from 98 and 99. And obviously if you look at some new releases, you'll see that stuff is still around, but a good half of it (and more to come in the future) has evolved by building upon it and adding some new sounds. Again it still needs some work but I think it's getting there... |
