sort of question about panning trick (a-la Ferry Corsten)

I could be answering my own question here, not having tried it yet. But here's what I am wondering. Ferry Corsten's sets often have this really cool effect that sounds like either panning is modulated by LFO or something else is used to create an accelerating panning it starts slow left right left right and then gets quicker and quicker until it becomes almost a flutter and then it comes back down to slow panning. I'm wondering if it is just an FX in the mixer or is it that the track has been recorded that way. It almost sounds like LFO speed controls the panning of the sound. Damn, having sold my virus I can't try it out with any of my current hardware (or so I think)... need to check.

any thoughts?
