Controlling Knobs on Audio Fx?
View this Thread in Original format

i have no problems controlling the knobs on midi instruments but when sent to audio, i'm using camelspace and camelphat to do some additional tweaking. when using midi learn in midi, it works no problem but when clicking midi learn in camelphat theres no reaction like i didn't do anything, am i overlooking something?

also, how do you record realtime audio with a pro soundcard. In midi u just record the automations, but if i want to record the automations in camelphat, its not midi anymore, and my audio is flatlining, any suggestions?

thanks

Do you actually have a MIDI track routed to the effect you're trying to control? Just because it's an effect and not an instrument doesn't mean you can use your controller without a MIDI routing.

As for realtime recording, you're really going to have to read your manual for that, because it's different with every card. If your audio is flatlining though (by which I assume you mean clipping), then realtime recording isn't going to help.

no, by flatlining i mean no signal. i've been told pro audio cards in general don't record what is 'in' your computer, only what is going into it, so since this is a recorded track how do i record that track with effect automations in audio with a signal? how do i route midi with a vst effect plugin? becasue its assigned to an audio track, so i'm not really sure what that requires me to do?

All you do in Cubase is create a MIDI track and set its output to the effect you're using. It'll show up in the outputs just like an instrument.

If you can't record realtime audio then it doesn't really sound like you have a "pro" audio card... all I do on mine is open up the onboard mixer and route an ASIO out to an ASIO in.

well i'm using a presonus firebox, so its not like i don't have a good card. i'm not quite sure exactly how to 'route' the in's and out's i've always been a bit confused on the technical side of things.

the thing with the effects though, is camelphat doesn't show up in the vsti (f11) menu only through an audio track effects sends menu. i'm assuming the plugin can only be used once the music is transformed to audio? maybe i'm wrong?

LOL, you post that in almost every thread :p

Good production sound cards will usually come with some kind of onboard mixing/DSP software. That's where you're going to have to do the routing, and the manual for that software should tell you how (for Emu Patchmix DSP they even give you a recording template for Cubase - yours may come with something similar, it'll be called something like "ASIO Direct Monitoring").

As for CamelPhat, it's obviously not going to show up on the VSTi list since it's not a VSTi, it's a VST effect (the "i" stands for "instrument"). You're going to be using it as an insert though, not a send.

hehe, yah i know, i just gotta learn how to use it to its full potential now :haha: the thing that sucks is i guess being 'too' musical has made it tougher grasping all the technical things, but i'm slowly but surely getting it :p i'll take a look in the manual sometime tomorrow, got a 10pg paper for tomorrow :o

i meant insert not sends earlier, i just typed the wrong word, oops.
