Trie varying other stuff, like the percs. Or add a BD on the last 1/8th and/or 1/16th of a bar once in a while. Or do something whacky now and again with 1/3ds on the last bar.
For effects you could put the BD through an attacked filter or something like that. All in all I haven't heard that many tracks that vary the overall tone of the BD very much. Except that they can be put through a filter of some kind as a buildup or breakdown.
It's often quite a nice sound when you put a BD and a bassline through the same 0-attack compressor.
