No music theory.
you guys dont know me, kind of new :S
i dont like intro threads though.
www.dangerboxstudios.com is my groups website, still under construction :D
anyway, no music theory. After producing for a long time you know how to make things sound good, but music theory will just teach you the name of what your already doing.
and honestly even the advanced stuff will not help in trance. just and opinion though. :D |

I can't play any instrument, but am learning a little theory online. But I think you know what sounds right and what doesn't "by ear". Thats how I'm learning. And looking at other artists midi files to see intervals and melodies and how rhythms/basslines work yogether. Just trial and error, I think really for those of us that don't have any formal training.
PC :tongue2
I wish to god that my parents had given me piano lessons when I was a kid tho. My boy is definitely gonna do them! |

| I play the clarinet. I also got about 4 years of basic music theory in elementary school, and then one extra year in sec2. After that, I switched to a music concentration program in sec3 where I had two music classes every day. After awhile I just got totally bored with it. It was too mathematical and not artistic enough. I just quit practicing, didn't pay attention in class, didn't do my homework, and then I flunked it horribly. I like electronica production because it allows me to directly interact with the synthetisers. I don't have to think of rules and notation systems, I can just go by ear. As long as you have a good concept of how a track is built and what notes sound good together, you don't really need any music theory. Just alot of imagination. |

grade 6 piano and grade 5 theory??? that doesn't add up unless this is some system i'm not familiar with...for grade 10 piano, you need grade 4 theory (history & harmony) and i'm ARCT piano, but never finished my certificate cause it requires grade 5 harmony, history and analysis...and for me, there's no benifit of putting myself through that torture :o
i think it makes producing 10000x easier having a musical foundation...sure if you're looking into techno, and some other less melodic genres, its not as predominate, but most music have melodies of sorts, and to be able to think creatively enough to think outside the box of typical major and minor chords, a good theoretical foundation is essential...although sometimes theres the lucky noobies who'll make a cool melody by accident lol |

| i played many years keyboard before i started with producing. and it helped a lot. now i can just sit there and play new melodies without trying to find the right notes, i've the experience which next note would fit into the melody i'm playing right now. and that's extremeley use usefull. especially while playing chords to find a nice progression. |

| No can't really play anything. Got a midi keyboard but don't know a lot about it.. Know a little about chords and that's it. But I think it's not neccesary but it's maybe useful to know a little about it. |

| Wouldn't Sonar, Cubase or more specifically soft synths be considered an instrument? I would even consider a groovebox or turntable an instrument. |

I can play basic guitar...basic chords, and being able to switch between them quickly, power chords, some melodies from random songs (stairway to heaven).
I had a year of piano lessons a few years back, but dont remember too much. Oh yeah and they taught us basic music theory in elementary school, which I also dont remember much of anymore. |
