Speaker Dilemma!!!

I'm desperately trying to find a good set of speakers for my computer for music production... From what I've seen so far, they generally make computer speakers small, not very powerful, and mostly for games and entertainment. The best ones I've seen have been the Klipsch Promedia 2.1, but there's a nice big price tag on 'em that I'm not yet ready to dish out ($300 CAD). I know the best thing to do in my situation would probably be to buy a pair of studio monitors... but that would require an amp along with it, from what I've heard... and the cost of the monitors and the amp together would be pretty costly if I wanted to get a decent pair...
Anyone have any suggestions as to which way I should go?
Oh, I should also mention that my budget is about $250 canadian :D |

I too was weary and afeard of those tiny computer speakers, i like large speakers.
This is prolly not great for music production but a potentially cheap way to go. $5 dollars US for a audio cord from radio shack to connect sound card to home stereo system.
I just connected my computer to my stereo. When a relative was throwing away a partly broken stereo (cd player broke) I took it and combined it with what I already had. Now the stereo acts like a 220 watt amp - (plenty loud enough for me) - and 4 speaker system - (2 from my stereo, 2 from the relative that was throwing them away). If i wanna play a cd i have to put it in the puter, but I still can also play the radio from the stereo.
works great, only i turn down the bass cause it travels so well to different floors and neihbors, as long as the base is turned down, they can't seem to hear my music, but if the base is on a little, everybody can hear it just as much as I hear it, thump thump thump - travels undiminished through walls. |

I've actually had that setup before... but I've decided to put my two big stereo systems in other places in the house :( |

I also have that problem. I use two ty compaq speakers for my music production. Lol, the results on other speakers can be really ugly.
I suggest you get some active studio monitors. These have built in amps. It is a little expensive (I think), but probably worth it in the long run. I don't know that much about different models, as I'm still saving the money, but just try surfing the web and read reviews.

This is something i found on some yamaha speakers
Prices of self-powered studio monitors have continued to fall, and Yamaha now gets credit for taking active monitor prices to an all new low. At just $600 per pair, the MSP5 monitors are a great fit for smaller project studios or for folks doing multimedia or computer-based audio/video production
If you're going for top of the line stuff, be it speakers or anything production related you have to pay a lot of money. I've seen speakers for 2000 per pair and more, but that is just overkill. Crazeee... |
