Promoting yourself?

Hardly see something like this asked, and the promotion section I thought was ONLY FOR promoting.

Anyways, I had my opportunity at playing two times at a small club/lounge type place. First time there, I did it for free. (of course) Second time, I opened for a more pop. DJ in the city, and again I did it for free. The owner calls me up 2 days after my gig, and says, "You know what, come drop by, I have some money for you"

That has to be a good thing right? :D

However I checked that lounge's calender for the next month, and no gigs or nothing for me. Also a guy I met at the club, plays at some other night club (however a smaller one) but he keeps saying he will call me, he will call me, but never does. I guess this is what the experienced DJs were talking about when getting the door slammed in your face.

So here I am, no gigs nothing, I want to promote myself I want clubs to be begging for me to play there around the world - my dream (who doesn't?) I did give out promo cd's at my first gig but that's it.

What else can I do to promote myself? I feel all trapped not going playing anywhere, again, I'm just getting into the performing part.

/ Long POst

Thanks for any help!

if they told you to drop by to pick up some cash, then drop by and pick it up!
Speak to him about some more slots- thats called a foot in the door- the trick is propping it open just enough so it doesnt slam in your face and break your nose.

Clubs schedule several months in advance btw.....

That's the thing. When I got the call, I showed up the next day, but the owner wasn't there (depeche mode concert) so his partner/co-owner gave the money to me. I forget (it was about a week ago) but I think he said 'in the future, come by and play again' and I replied with, 'of course, anytime'

But again, this is a lounge type thing, would be nice to move on to bigger crowds. However the two times I played here they were only warm up slots, so I shouldn't really be waiting for a club gig just yet, right? Anyways I'm thinking of doing a radio show to promote myself, but when reading the info, it says the shows are broadcast from your home computer. Wtf? Don't radio shows get broadcast from the studio?

Most radio shows are broadcast live from a PC, or the DJ sends in an mp3 recording of a set he prepared for the radio. Just picture your house as the radio studio, isn't internet fantastic.

But how do I 'talk' to the listeners?

Yea but from my home computer? I'm still not following. Call ins, talking to listeners, how do I hear them, from the radio? And I respond in my computer mic? How do you hook your computer up to work with the radio? I guess the station sets it up for you?

What I don't understand is from what perspective you're thinking of doing this?

FM radio? ( which would be almost exclusively done in a radio station or prerecorded in advance at your house maybe )
Webcast ? ( which would be almost exclusively done from someone's house ).

In either case I don't know why you would ever need to handle call-ins. If that's you're idea of a show I'm curious to hear where you what direction you want to take it.

Most electronic shows will talk about music, new releases, upcoming parties but usually never have call ins.

There's systems out there for a phone terminal to be hooked up to a mixer but in your case I don't see the use.
