don't get me wrong though.. its simplicity is what makes it so good.. too many producers focus on getting as much sounds as possible in their tracks nowadays, whereas Opacity is produced with emotion.

anyway, i'm halfway through and all of the tracks have been great so far.. loving your set :) mixing is good too.

Yeah, I heard Chakra - Opacity on John '00 Fleming's White Label Republic cd. For some reason, though, JOOF has it in the middle of the set on the first cd. When I got the "Revelations" compilation (came out in late October) with this and Third Time Lucky on it I didn't know that Opacity had such a killer intro. Sometimes you get lucky.

Hey man, awesome set!
Actually this is the first time I listened to psy and although I was a bit sceptical I really liked it!
I can really feel the energy in it, and the transitions well what can I say, just great, very solid!
I am downloading your Sonic Boos set now because the this tastes for more :).
Thanks for this one!

Favorite track : Matt Darey – Eternity (JOOF remix)

thanks man ;). I hope you like "Sonic Boom". That was the set that started my evolution away from your standard hard-melocic epic trance that most everyone plays to completely non-commercial melodic trance and psytrance. This style is here to stay for me, and I like it alot better. I started listening to yours but got sidetracked, so I'll get to it tonight. From the little I heard it sounded good!

Hey mate,
nice mix you got there it seems! I could never tell what JOOF is tho... even though I listen to Psy pretty much I never saw that name before. But there seems to be a new wave of Producers that used to play "normal" trance, now trying out a fusion of Full-On, Techtrance and Progtrance. Sounds not bad at all to me. Though I have to say I have to be in the mood for it. Right now I think I am ready (though I usually like a more twisted and darker style)... anyway, I just downloaded it and checked it out.

just as a side comment. I really like it if there is a concept behind a mix. And I personally am totally fascinated by space and SciFi.

So here we go, starting the ride with a calm groover. Not a bad tune to start with. Picks up drive and starts to carry me on waves of sound. *turns up volume*.. really great "lightweight" tune, must remember that one!
Things get trippier and trippier now as we progress to the next track. This one is maybe a little cheezy for me, but it has a great atmosphere for sure.
The next transition is almost seamless. Love how you subtlely change the bass. Things getting a little more mechanic here. Its a beautiful tune. Dont know why I suddenly like that style of Psy that much. It has a beautiful symphonic aspect. BUT: The lead sound is cheap somehow. Anyway, not your fault. Its just a pity cause this tune is giving away potential. Ah, now the second lead. much better. I forgive.
Next transition is a little more direct, but it still works.
The track is not too much my taste. But its dreamy, and fits in the mix. Next time a little less cheese please ;)
On we go, with the sounds definately getting harder and more twisted. Into the darker realms, where the insane robots are lurking, so to speak.
Another transition made without any sign of weakness. You kinda scare me. Now @33:00 and totally feeling the music here. This is another badass track that fits like a glove in the set.
Next track. Things getting funky now. Thats a solid track with a good driving feeling. Like we are picking up drive, reaching Warp5...Warp6...Warp10.
Yeah, its Warp10! Next tune makes me float through the quantum tunnel. It's Zirrex - The Solar System Pt.2... damn, what an awesome track!!! Your highlight in here IMO.
Another great tune here. I think your transitions are kinda quick, nothing bad since they are simply perfect in terms of fading and beatmatching, but IMO you could try to make the tunes morph slowlier into each other.
Now you try to end the mix with some insane funkiness? The track is funky as hell. I think that sample is from a Daft Punk tune, or am I wrong? The tune is very good. So damn funky, it makes me go crazy here. Sweet!

Thanks a lot for sharing! Its really well done, hope you can get something useful out of my review ;) ...anyway, this will get on my mp3 player for the long train/bus rides :)
only one more thing: make your mixes longer, I would love that ;)

J00F = John '00' Fleming and also John's label.

Space and SciFi :conf:

Quantum physics is certainly not fiction, however 'uncertain' ;) it may be. Whether that particular quote is scientifically accurate, or really says anything, is another matter though.

The mix is on my ipod and waiting to be listened to...

quote:
Quantum mechanics is a fundamental physical theory which extends and corrects Newtonian mechanics, especially at the atomic and subatomic levels. It is the underlying framework of many fields of physics and chemistry, including condensed matter physics, quantum chemistry, and particle physics. The term quantum (Latin, "how much") refers to the discrete units that the theory assigns to certain physical quantities, such as the energy of an atom at rest

Look up Schrodinger's cat as well ;)

Thanks for the detailed feedback ;).

- Yes, that last track *is* a remix of Daft Punk - Techno-Logic

- JOOF = John '00 Fleming JOOF blurs the boundaries between harder progressive (and sometimes darker epic) and psytrance. What comes out often sounds a lot like trance as it was before people started getting into the sound of '99 epic trance and all that commercial 'trance' that followed.
- The Zirrex track is pretty crazy, isn't it? I found that one on an otherwise unnoteworthy compilation. I dare you to play that part in the presence of someone completely tripping out.

- I do have to take issue with one thing you said :D. LSG - Netherworld (Oliver Prime remix) is my second favorite track (behind Strange World). It's hardly cheesy :D.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Ok, I don't like this sort of stuff but I did quite enjoy the first half. The second half was waaaay too hard for me.

Technically it was very good, apart fromt the mix around the 25min mark. There just seemed to be too much going on and the tunes didn't complement each other well. The beats may have been slightly off, I think, and I'm not 100% sure that the phrasing was correct. That was the only one and I think it was noticeable just because the rest of the transitions appeared pretty seamless.

Overall, good job and a professional sounding mix. First half was nice, second half a bit too much for me.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback. I like harder trance, but I understand that a lot of people don't.

Concerning that transition......

- the phrasing was correct (Netherworld has some odd rhythm that kicks in around that section and there's a lot of fx going on with The Access Code)

- and the beats were matched fine when I listen to it again (The Access Code doesn't have the kick and the claps perfectly aligned and Netherworld has a bit of delay on the clap...so that may throw some people off). But I see how you might think there was quite a bit going on at that point, though it came out the way I wanted to :D.

Or your mix... ;)

How about they keys? Do you know what key each tune is in? I think maybe the melodies clash. Something about it just doesn't seem right and I can't put my finger on it exactly (it's bugging me now!). I agree with you that it's pretty well beatmatched and the phrasing is ok (although the placement of the kicks and percussion certainly makes it sound messy imo, despite that not necessarily being your fault).

What do you use to create your mixes? Are they mixed live using turntables/CD decks or sequenced in Ableton (or similar)?
DJ Kenosis
Just listened to it again.......

- I'm really happy with the transition sounds except for about three or four seconds (25:00-25:04 or so) when a tiny bit crashes too much at once on both tracks. I had to adjust my stereo a bit to hear that, but it is there. I don't see the problem with the keys. I was wanting to shift moods just a tiny bit with The Access Code, and the keys seem to be matched reasonably well, certainly the bassline notes aren't in conflict. But yeah, I do see what you're talking about. ;)

I used cdjs to record this. I'm done with vinyl as a lot of really good psy never gets a cd release, and I am starting to produce my own tracks now. Even though you can do a lot of tricks and real-time remixing with Abelton I'm philosophically opposed to anything that does beatmatching for me at least until I have about half a dozen completed tracks :D
