If you buy a political ad during elections you can go to jail (pg. 2)

If you find any that have been enforced recently, let me know.

That's missing the point anyway... if a corporation donates $20 billion and the party can only spend $1 million on ads, then isn't it obvious that it's in exchange for political favours? That's a far more serious problem than advertising, and that's what the Conservatives are trying to mitigate. Big Business Government.

a corporation could *easily* promote their own political agenda by having a "private citizen" buy an ad.

this is ripe for abuse...I support the law.

Free speech is abused sometimes. That doesn't make it any less free. Just exactly what is so wrong with a corporation "promoting their own political agenda?" Aren't they supposed to have the right to do that?

If what you're saying is that Canadians are too stupid and uninformed on their own that they'd be brainwashed in seconds by expensive advertisements, then you're probably right but it's still not a valid excuse.

Money = Power in the world ... this does not exclude in politic ;)

Put yourself in their shoes, if there is a private donation into your party & somehow that private donation links into a corporation. Who has more power in that case? The government or the corporation? You can be the judge on it. :D

Unfortunately, there are a lot of secrecy inside our(any) government we have no clue about. Just need to think outside of the box to see what is really happening around us.

The Canadian voter has the power, if he chooses to vote and not be an idiot about it.

But you're right, this is about a money = power perception, and as stated earlier, the LPC knows that most of its support comes from large corporations while most Conservative support comes from private individuals - hence this ban.

(most corporate donations went to the old PCs, and most individual donations went to the old CA)

It should be noted that things have drastically changed since the new campaign finance laws came into effect.

Bahahaha, "55555 Inc." is the best. For those who aren't aware, that's basically Paul Martin's slush fund that he uses to funnel large personal donations into the party.

I actually found a breakdown of the 55555 donations a while back, but I can't remember where it was.

55555 Inc. is a company set up by Paul Martin to shift donations from his personal leadership campaign to the Lieberal Party.

He generated almost $12 million in donations - the most in Canadian history, and in violation of party rules.

The question is: who donated to Paul Martin?

Here's a partial listing:

http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/inte...n/oe01374e.html
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/inte...n/oe01421e.html
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/inte...n/oe01387e.html

Note the use of numbered companies, and also the fact that most of the donors were companies, and not individuals.

Hmmm that site seems to be down. Couldn't be because of the election, right? It's just a coincidence, right? Canada is a democracy, right?

Wrong.
Fir3start3r
Liberal are screwed this election when it comes to corporate donations.
The wifey and I recently had a converstation with our local Conservative candidate who mentioned to us that since there was no love lost between Chretien and Martin, Chretien left a law behind that essentially caps corporate donations to a couple thousand dollars... ;)

Who says you can't make money in politics! Take special note of the ones in bold... many are from the telecommunications, pharmaceutical, food, and entertainment industries - curiously, the same industries in which Canadian governing bodies (CRTC, FDA) will not allow American companies to come in to compete.

Honestly people, what do you think these massive donations are for?

Actually, I stand corrected...

Taken from the Conservative website...

quote:

The Conservative Party will stand up for:

• Ending the influence of big money in politics by banning corporate and union political donations and limiting individual donations to $1000.

>>Source<<

That looks like a cap for ALL political contributions...
It also appears that this isn't in play yet, I'll have to confirm...

DigiNut
^ One of the reasons I intend to vote for Harper is simply the reforms he's planning with donation limits, elected senators, etc. Even if he accomplishes nothing else of importance, if he follows through with those promises then it will pave the way for fair elections and a fair legislation process which will at least help subsequent governments to do some good for this country.
St_Andrew
How would they define political donations though? To me it seems like it could be pretty easy to go around it. Not really a great idea, but might help to deal with the current corrupt situation... But yeah something needs to be done about the role of money in politics, not only in Canada but in pretty much every western world country.
