[Prog/Trance] David Michael - Spectre [320kbps FULL]

Decided to go ahead and share this track I've had finished for a few weeks. I submitted it to a label, but the guy thought that it was too cheesy, so here it is for your listening pleasure. :)

It's a full 320kbps file and an almost 12 minute song, so it's not exactly 56k friendly at almost 27 megabytes.

Reviews appreciated.

lol the kick is bit clicky.. a bit too clicky and maybe its just my cheap boxes. the boompa boompa boompa bass does sound a bit cheezy ;) and the piano combo too.. still I like it.. the label shouldnt whine. piano sounds nice, but nothing much new being introduced.. break sounds lovely ;).. but after the break.. again nothing new.. then after the second break I find the arp very refreshing ;) you did good on that! not entirely my style but I enjoyed listening! good job!

Takkra, appreciate the review, thanks!
Mr Rogers
really cool track, lotta energy.
not a huge fan of piano in trance but this song pulls it off.
i think the synth at 8:00 doesn't match the rest of the song though, sticks out like a soar thumb, but thats just me.
good track

As promissed, here I am. Send it to a cheasy label! Just walk into the store and find the cheasyest record you can find and write down the adress. I know some guys who would buy it, but would expect to hear it more in an underground club than on any charts.

Nice drive with the double bassline with the grittyness. Might sound nice with one of the off-center. Kind of brings a tribal instint in me and makes me want to hunt something. I think it might be a good idea to always have the two basses playing together, because your kind of giving your game away. I would work this element out and replace some other elements. Because it's the only bit that realy makes it a good track. Sounds very enviting for something rythmic on top.

The whole track is very flat on the bassline and unflat in the lead. It's too much of a contrast to my ears. Choose either rythmic or melodic for this one I reckon. The piano melody in the first section is very standard, if you can find a way to make the piano glide off the last note, or you might pitch shift it into a legato, that would be freaky stuff.

The next thing I would add is a jazzy synth chord on the 8/16th note of the bar. But that's my trademark kind of so keep off :P

I hate the ARP btw, it's terrible! Almost sounds like a FL preset ARP. Not meaning to be harsh.

Well, that's my review. I think you will have mixed reactions to this one i'm afraid. It's kind of two halfs of two worlds mixed into one setting, not enough of either. Christ what a sentence...

kind regards,

Charlie Darwin

Hey.

-Nice driving kick and drum groove at the start. The drop out of the kick around 6s is not needed however. That sort of drop needs to be used for introducing new elements :). Its somewhat of a letdown when nothing happens. Introduce the basslien or something. I'd try dropping in a the bassline, but have it filtered low, around 125hz or so and slowly bring it up to full-on where you originally had the bassline start.
-Loose the vox :). Not fitting for this piece and unless you are doing crazy, unrecognizable things to the vocals that come with FLS, just avoid them :P.
-I'm likeing the piano and the whole groove of the bassline. Do more with filtering stuff however. Its a bit too repetative. Throw down some phaser on the bassline every so often or something to spice up the mix. Keep people guessing what will happen next ;).
-I like the break-in for your breakdown. Try filtering throwing a low pass filter over the clap as it fades away.
-I'm likeing the long note bass in the breakdown.
-The break-out needs some work though. While the breakdown was nice, nothing was really introduced when the kick comes back in. I'm not saying be standard but itll add some more listenability to the track.
-The second break is good with the longer enhanced melody. Watch the resonant frequencies ont he piano however. They become apparent in this section for some reason (maybe I jsut didnt notice before...). To fix that, turn down the 500Hz band a bit on your parametric EQ for the piano.
-I really like the bass growl that comes in :). Nice effect.
-The arp thats coming in at the moment is good but it clashes with some of the notes with your underlying pad sometimes. Also, the arp instrument needs better EQing. Its way too heavy in the mix. Drop its volume and drop out some of its mids. The goal is transparency, not isntant noticability ;).
-Good outro. Its nice clean and not overly drawn out.

Overall, this track has some decent potential. Theres quite a few things to work on however that will make this track really stand out. I noticed there wasnt really a single, strong melody that stood out in the song but thats not necessarily a bad thing; just depends on what you were going for. Def finish this up and repost :). I'm interested to hear how it turns out.
Grade: B (needs some of work but has some really good potential)

Cheers,
Zac

Thanks for the nice long reviews, nhibberd and DarkSword! Nice to finally start getting some in-depth help here. ;)

Commenting as I listen...

Yeah, the kick is indeed a little clicky. Might fix this by turning it down a tad.
Nice atmosphere there in the beginning. Really really great pads and piano. Liking the darker tone of this.
The bass is nice too, maybe a little overdriven, I personally would turn down the cutoff a little.
Great atmosphere @2:35 ... cant mention it often enough. It's getting a little repetitive though. I would like the percs a little clearer. Maybe turning down the kick a little will help already.
Sweet breakdown @3:30 ... well done.
Now @7:00 it gets really surprising, thats what I call changing and alternating themes. The lead in the end is also very well done. Really liking the melodies here.
You should keep an eye on your levels though, things seem to get a little muddy here.

Nevertheless, I really was digging this tune. You did a great job on the melodies and the atmosphere. If I was you, I'd try to fix the little EQ problems and then I'd add some more details, maybe cut this tune by 2 minutes or something like that.
Good job :)

Thanks a lot for the review, Cybernetica.

Thinking back I do agree that things are a bit muddy. I will work on my clarity in the future. Glad you liked the atmosphere I tried to create. :)

Lepanto
though it might be a bit "cheesy" has the record fellow not been following music for a while? it's not any more cheesy than half the other garbage i've acquired.

nice ch00n, the flow is nice, and the feel of it is massive, like a stadium speakers feel to it. very nice overall though not my type of style. keep it up.
Aquarian
I like that benassi-like bass in the background. Is that a 3osc? ;)

Intro is nice, but the piano gets a bit repetitive and annoying after awhile.

After the first break I was expecting a bit more variation or somekind of climax - but it just sounds like another intro.

I think you've got some good elements. But overall it moves too slow, the piano is way overused and gets annoying.

Arp melody at 7min should've come in way earlier in the track.

Whoever said earlier that this sounds like a default fruity arp - I double that. :p

I don't really like the structure of the track at this point. I think it needs some rearranging - and some better technical aspects. Good start though - it's got some potential. Doesn't really sound cheesy though, so I don't see what that guy was going on about.
