Interviews

Ok so tommorrow I have an interview for my placement year at university, for a software company called Kainos, though I won't actually be doing software engineering, I applied for 'Systems Engineer'

Basically I've never had a proper interview before (I don't think my part time job counts really - I basically got given the job at the interview), so therefore any tips or help for interviews would be very nice indeed, as I really would like this job.

Thanks

Lol, last week I had 16 interviews:wtf:
Just be really confident and be yourself, don't go there looking really insecure. Be prepared to be asked some technical questions, prob most behavioral though. Backup every answer with examples from own experiences.

Look at some questions on that site and have an idea on what you would say.
Is this 1st round?

Well to be fair your Uni should have prepared you to go out on interviews with a professional development module showing u interview techniques and what not.

IT job interviews tend to be fairly relaxed affairs tho not all companies work like this. Make sure u are dressed well and look presentable. Look interested and make sure u read up about the company on their website so when they ask if u have any questions u can show them u have been interested in what the company does. Make sure to keep eye contact a lot with the interviewer, and keep mentioning what a great opportunity it would be for you to work for the company.

Above all, make sure u show them that you could be a great asset for the company and stay clear of any negative comments.

Or just ignore my advice seeing as im unemployed atm as well :p

the interview usually consists of two parts: the general bull and the technical part.

in the general section, they'll ask you to tell about your experience up to date, ask you about your career goals, what is the perfect job for you, what kind of companies (small/big) would you like to work in.

in the technical part, they are going to ask you to demonstrate specific practical (especially, for IT staff - it is always practical, hands-on) knowledge: like configure two cisco switches or configure a biztalk server. it all depends on the job responsibilites: read job description carefully (especially "tasks and responsibilities"), chances are you are going to be asked a question dealing with one of the products in that list of tasks.

good luck.

oh yeah, a failed interview is also a great experience to reflect on one's mistakes. yes, it's unpleasant, but it gives you great experience nonetheless.

aside from the obvious advice... don't be afraid to ask questions. yes, the company is interviewing you to see if you're the right person for the position, but you're also interviewing them to see if it's the right kind of job for you. the more you find out about the company beforehand, the easier and quicker it will be for you to catch on once you start working there. it also proves to the interviewer that you're very interested.

act laid back and uninterested. playing hard to get makes them want you more. talk salary first to let them know money talks benifits and bull walks.

i actually thought the laid back part was good advice, but more on in the way of being relaxed and not nervous.

..depends on the interviewer.

the other person in my team had his interview at a pub because the HR manager was running late!

mine was very laid back, he didnt care that i didnt really have many questions etc, he said about flexi hours, the fact you can get pissed and come in late the next day. depends on interviewer though...
