Any Tips for Visiting Cologne?

I shall be travelling to Cologne shortly and was wondering what would be some highlights to do there. Any suggestions are welcome. Also, are there any record stores in the area?
I am not exactly sure what part of Cologne I will be staying in but still suggestions are welcome. I reside in the U.S. in Los Angeles and this will be my first trip to Continental Europe, though couple years back I was in England and Ibiza.

ONE IS THE
TARM CENTER IN FRECHEN (NEARLY COLONGNE)
AND THE ALTE WARTESAAL AT THE GRANDSTATION AND THE COLONGNE CATHEDRAL
ANOTHER GOOD RECORD STORE IS IN ESSEN;
