From memory, hdds are magnetic storage, and degaussing makes stuff un-magnetic.
Makes the hdd irreversibly blank, and un-usable

Job done, overwrites all data a specific amount of times to DoD levels so its not possible to recover (probably more secure then physically destroying the disk as bits of data might be recoverable from the damaged plates)

Yeah EE is probabily the best software to use, set the deletion method to GUTTMAN 10 PASSES DOD, this will remove your file 10 times using Zeros & Ones, Total un-recoverable.
If you have already deleted it using standard windows delete then its going to exist in the File Allocation Table waiting to be overwritten. If this is the case then your going to need to Clean the Free Disk space which takes a long time esp when you have a huge HDD and using GUTTMAN DELETION. |

| I have this program i bought a few years ago called like "Clean Sweeper" or Eraser or some lame like that but anyways... I wipes the HDD like 20times, verifys that there is no readable stuff on it, and then lets you wipe it again if you want to. its a surefire way, apparently the DoD uses it (it says on teh box its certified by DoC Dept. #idontreallycare). its good for us secret agents/robots. |
