TO MY FELLOW WWW.GINOGINA.CA PEERS:

Thank you for primarily taking the time to read this! It's greatly appreciated thus far.

I was watching CNN with my Mommy at midnight and the topic at hand was regarding the sudden death of renowned defense attorney Robert Shapiros son Brent Edward Shapiro on Monday, October 10th, 2005. Young Brent was tragically killed from a drug overdose from using the chemical ecstacy. The drug induced cardiac arrest causing his brain to shut down. His parents decided to "pull the plug" that was keeping him alive. This was because Brent did not have an active living will which meant he did not have any specific requests in legalized documentation regarding his final wishes. His parents acted according to how they assumed he would have requested certain procedures to be done.

Watching this interview made me quite upset. I think it's tragic that these people had to bury someone they loved so much at such a young age. Brent was engaged to be married, doing significantly well in university, and was on top of the world. His family was living the "American Dream". Brent had problems with the abuse of narcotics and alcohol at such a young age. He was first subjected to this at the age of 15. He first indulged in marijuana and alcohol then as he became older his addictions were much more severe.

Hearing this made me realize and think of those who I am friends with or affiliated with. Our generation indulges in these forms of drugs and think nothing of it. They just are so enchanted by the rush of it and the affect it has on their bodies. They don't realize that this is a disease, it may not be a physical one, but it's a psychological one. People believe and become so relient on feeling this false feeling of euphoria that it becomes a constant craving. They want more and more. Brent actually stated his gateway drug was marijuana. I know some of you may agrue that it isn't. However once you experience the effects it has it leaves you curious on how much powerful drugs will leave you.

Our society has a problem, a very major problem. Drugs are found everywhere...in our schools (even elementary schools, essentially that sickens me, because I have a sister in grade eight, and my stomach turns when I know that when she goes to school...she can gain access to whatever her peers have to offer), workplaces, and streets.

I can't be one hundred percent innocent in saying that I haven't experimented with drugs myself. I have tried marijuana several times and ecstacy once. However I have moved past that fixation on experimentation. I find it pointless. I don't like knowing that I am not feeling something real, that a substance is controlling how I feel. That frightens me.

Getting back to my sister. It hurts me quite abit to know how easy access she has to drugs. She has admitted to me that she has tried marijuana and it'll never happen again. I'm glad she told me rather than having myself finding that our from a secondary person. I know her friends and what they do in their extra-curricular lives. However, her friends know and respect her values and what her limitations are when it comes to having fun with them. When she hangs out with them she does it in a natural frame of mind.

I also cannot stress enough on talking with her about drug awareness and the effects of using them. I would say we talk once a week about that topic at the least.

I also do not want to bury her. I love her so much, she's my world and I would die for her. She knows that too, she's one of my best friends. Although she's 14, she has matured greatly beyond her years and I am so proud of her.

I have burried quite a few of my close friends and a couple of cousins because of drug related overdoses and it hurts, it hurts alot. To know that their deaths could have been prevented if they has just had taken the time to think of what they were doing could have saved so many broken hearts.

However, maybe that was meant to be so I could help in the prevention of the use of drugs.

I also couldn't bear to lose another friend or another member of my family. I love my friends and family more than anything in this whole wide world. They are my world, they have helped me shape the person I am today and I couldn't repay them enough for always being there. I also have a great amount of love for those on this site, many of you are my friends, many of you I have gone to school with and grown up with.

Please...the next time you take a puff, a hit, etc... of a narcotic THINK OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO YOUR BODY, MIND, AND SOUL. There are people who love you and don't want to see you hurt yourself and you are hurting your body. Don't be so selfish...THINK...just THINK!

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, I appreciate this more than you'll ever know!
