freebirds is only good when you're really drunk @ like 3am leaving a party.
I like king taco's burrito with red sauce.
El Ranchero in alhambra has awesome machaca and eggs and also a chorizo and eggs burrito. |

Dave perhaps I was being simplistic in my query...but if I had named some obscure shop in the Mission district hardly anyone would know what I was talking about
Most visitors to No Cal have a working knowledge of Gordos so I mentioned that name...even if it is on the lower rungs of the ladder when it comes to "Mission-style" burritos
I had to start somewhere
Anyway back to my original question
I have tried what most of you have suggested and this is what amazes me...I would suspect that a region closer to Mexico would serve the best burritos, but honestly the best burritos I've ever had are up North. And no this isn’t some sort of No Cal bias...I love my place and job here in OC |

Many of you have asked what I mean by a “mission-style” burrito
Well…
All burritos pretty much have the same ingredients, but the key is in how one prepares these ingredients.
The mission-style burritos are always served w/ the perfect tortilla. Most shops I’ve been to up north have some sort of “steaming” machine where they lay the tortilla and steam it right away. What comes out is a soft and chewy tortilla. Places down here either have a raw gross tortilla that is undercooked or a hard crispy tortilla that is not enticing. Most of the restaurants up north have a slab of cheese already on the tortilla so when they “steam” it the cheese is already melted and gooey.
I love carne asada and I’m sorry most of the places down here have served up either very dry meat or string pieces of asada. The ones up north made it a point to marinate the 1-2inch morsels of beef for a few days. The result was carne aside that was damn juicy and always tasty.
I’ve always enjoyed my burrito w/ rice, beans and cheese in addition to the 2 ingredients I listed above. In all of those categories the burrito makers up north made it a point to serve up something fresh and delicious.
The final package was AMAZING. The key point is consistency. I've been to places down here where one day I might find something nice but then say 6-7 hours later they serve something horrible. Again please don’t look as this as some sort of No cal bias…
I know there must be a whole bunch of places that meet and exceed what I have mentioned... |
