given that they x-ray luggage at airports, and whatever magnetic fields etc. there might be around.. can hardware be damaged by sending it through airport scanning?
e.g. speakers, hard drives, dvd writers etc |

Hard disks, floppy disks, flash ram etc are all fine.
Over here they make them take the laptop out of the bag and put it through the xray seperatly.
And think of it, if these things did damage hardware, thered be uproar and youd hear about it. |

I doubt it.
With film, I know you can buy xray protection bags but I find the concept to be a bit of a hoax. It will be useful in instances were the Xray is poorly calibrated and too high in power but these are the more rare and extreme cases.
Having extensively travelled, I've had laptops to disposable cameras to pretty much any type of electronic gear go through xray checks. Never had a single problem.
And with laptops they usually make you take it out of the case and turn it on first, and then it goes through xray. |

They usually don't send your computer through the X-Ray, if worse comes to worse they ask you to turn it on to show that its actually a computer and not a bomb.

At every airport i've been to I always have to put throught the x-ray and i never had to turn it on. You must take out of the bag though...god help you if you don't. You feel the wrath of the TSA.
If you don't take it out of the bag they take you aside and do bomb swipes, but they don't make you turn it on. |

I've taken disposable, slr's with exposed film in them, and exposed film in the film cases through the security xrays (and have had them checked as well) and never had a problem with my film being erased or any undesirable effects to the finished picture. so yeah...there's that big "DON'T TAKE EXPOSED FILM THROUGH THE SECURITY SCREENING STATION IT'LL GET RUINED OMG" but I've never noticed anything :) |
