My parents recently bought a sony Handycam, the model is a DCR-dvd 403. I was just wondering if anyone can give me some info on wether this was a good choice because im not very familiar with cameras and i think the guy at the sony store ripped them off. They paid $1200 for it. It has alot of features, u can record straight onto a dvd thats inside the camera and also takes like 1800 pix. The camera is 3.0 megapixels but i dont know if its worth it. Also if i decide to take it back can some recommend a better choice. I know there are many people on this site who know stuff about camera's any comments will be appreciated.

thanks guys

I am not familiar with that type of camera, but a couple of things:

1. If you got it from the Sony store, then the price isnt too bad. I found that their prices are pretty close to what you will get other places. Yes places like Futureshop and Best Buy may have lower prices, but nothing in the 'ripped off' price range.

2. If it records straight to dvd for viewing, that means the camera converts to MPEG2. Which means, if you want to edit the movies on your computer, and make a nice home movie, you have to rip the dvd, load into the software, and then recode it. That means that there will be a real loss in quality. (compressed 2 times)

Now say you got a camera that records straight to a different digital format, it would not be compressed. You would have to load it to your computer, edit, and then burn as a dvd. That way, you only compress 1 time, and the quality is as high as possible.

So it depends on whether you parents are willing to edit movies or not.
