audio file formats: mp3 vs atrac & atrac3plus

hello out there,

recently i've ran into different formats for audio files on a computer and do need more info that the sony website gives (since they promo the atrac/atrac3/atrac3plus formats like mad). anyone use these formats? are they truly better quality than an mp3 format.

reasons: obvious size on computer, which will lead to more files. i will be looking into ssl (eventually). is the quality better?

any opinions are welcomed. thanks
Joost
I think atrac is not better than MP3, high quality MP3 sounds much better imo.

that was my initial thought, since you compress much more for an atrac format then quality will be lost. sony's stands by it though and states that quality is much better than an mp3.

thx!

I have always heard negative things about atrac.

Maybe you can read up more on it here : http://www.minidisc.org/aes_atrac.html ( I didn't read the site but minidisc.org would have reliable info )

thanks ma man. i've also done a fair bit of more reading...and sony changed their mind and will allow mp3 format on their future players. a gamble took by sony but apple beat them to the profits.

Atrac3Plus is like a 160k mp3 imo..

But its much smaller.

are there really apps that can read atrac w/out having to convert to some thing else?

i was about to say... i remember atrac wasn't getting much love.

anyways... not that it would mean too much for me... i bought my MD back in the late 90's, way before the whole cd recording thing became as affordable as it is now.

remember when the first consumer phillips cd recorder? that thing was like 600.00... i was like "SIKE!" when i was at the store...

i suggest you to stay with mp3 and buy a new hard drive :D
