Acceess Virus TI or Dual core AMD64 computer (which would you buy???) (pg. 3)

These are the specs of my present computer,
Asus P4P800-VM motherboard (Intel 865G chipset)
Pentium 4 processor (800FSB)
1Gb Ram 400MHz FSB
120 GB hard drive (7200rpm)
When I bought the computer 2 years ago, I didn't know much about them as it was my first PC, although I did request one to be built for audio.
And by the way, the new computer is dual processor AMD64 X2, has 2Gb ram, 200Gb program drive, 2x 74Gb audio drives(10,000Rpm) and graphic's card with dual outputs. ultra quiet Zalman 7000 CPU cooler, etc etc |

Which Dual Core runs at 4.4GHz?
I'd strongly suggest to get the Dual Core over the Virus... Even though it looks like a beast of a machine, even when you stop making music (probably is inevitable), you'll still have more use for the PC.
Then again, a better PC is much more capable of handling next-gen VSTi's, while the Virus will just be sitting there.
As Storyteller pointed out, quite some people seem to overrate its use... |

its 2x2.2ghz not 4.4.. second processor aint gonna double the speed or hz..
still the fastest prosessor is Athlon64 FX-57 but its (quite) expensive |

Or you could buy an athlon 64 3700+ san diego (2.2ghz) for £150 and overclock it to 2.8 which is FX-57 speeds, saving you £600. Both processors use the same core and have 1mb of l2 cache. |

Dual processor is only interesting with cubase sx3 as far is I know. Other applications do not allow you to use both cores at the same time (yet).
Anyway, I would personally go for the pc first to give you the necessary headroom on cpu so you can get to work ;)
Virus can come later and will take off some cpu probably if you'll use it often. |
FL Studio also takes advantage of dual processor, splitting them between mixer/vsti and the app itself.
As for the original post, I suggest you get a Virus B or C and spend the rest on other synths/hardware. |

Man, forget about the PC, your computer is good enough to produce...
Buy a Virus (or any other hardware synth that you like - TRY BEFORE BUY!) and use our 2.4ghz to sequence it, play some drum samples and other channel exclusive effects....
If you buy a PC, on 5 years you will have to upgrade it again, but your Virus will always be your virus...
And I'm trying to avoid the vst synths versus hardware synths discussion (there's a lot of thread about it). |

As far as I know FL Studio does not take advantage of dual core CPUs. VSTs are DLLs and loaded by the same FL.exe process that everything else in the application runs in. I didn't see anything in the release notes for version 6 saying they had added dual CPU support. Did I miss something? |

You will also be able to sell your Virus for much more than your PC in that time as well. Synths don't depreciate much compared to PCs.
I forgot to mention in my last post that I had the same dilemma(well, mine was upgrade my virus C to the TI and buy a V-Synth XT or buy a new PC). I went for the synths before the upgrade, I figured the PC technology advances fast and I would be able to spend less later for the same power I would buy now.
I then ended up working so much overtime in December that I bought the PC as well. Too bad I have been working so much that I don't have time to use any of it. |

thanks once again to all the people who've posted their opinions regarding the choice between computer/ virus.
I have to agree with the comments from the previous 3 posts. I spent £950 ($1800) on my computer 2 and a half years ago and asked for it to be built specifically for audio. I think that the next time I buy a pc I will get it from an audio specialist as they are far more clooed up about what you really need. But I did look upon my computer as an investment and just like you wouldn't buy a brand new car every 2 years, I think i'll squeeze another 8 months out of my current machine before I get something flashier (and as you pointed out, in 8 months computer will be cheaaper/better whereas virus TI will still be a **** hot synth.)
So I think the Virus has to get my vote. |

I'm pretty sure that FL Studio uses multithreading, so it can most likely take advantage of dual cores and hyperthreading via the OS splitting the threads for efficiency. |

I'll be annoying.
I don't think you should buy either.
If you want some more computer muscle, but still to keep it in the box why not look at a powercore? That way you get the bulk of the Virus (no hypersaw, but you ccan mke do and mend with a whole host of VSTis), and a ton of killer FX that will seriously increase the quality of what you can acheive.
At the same time if you buy one second hand you save a ton of cash 9already depreciated) and if you don't like it you can sell it on again without loosing a substantial chunk of cash like you would with both the TI or the comp..
If you havent got one already, use some of the cash you've saved to get a midicontroller. Your tracks will thank you.
