If you're going to a foreign country, it would probably be a good idea.
If you're stopping in the States, I think it's manditory.

its just plain smart to get one! they are the PIMPS of identification... and even though they are stressfull and often the cause of worry ( ie: losing it or it being stolen)
they are just a good idea in general

i lost sight of my passport hours before leaving Syria, i was completely freaking out, i even called Ottawa and was minutes away to cancel it so I can get a new one at the embassy... the big scare was because of the mandatory military service in that country for nationals... i was in big trouble because i could not get out of the country as easy, military temporary exemption had the old passport number, it would be way to sketch to show myself with a different passport/number.

i finally found it under a furniture, it fell and slid in the wrong place... those were the worst hours of my life.

Sure do. My brother went to both and he needed a Passport both times.

That happened to my brother's friend in Cuba. He lost it the night before they were leaving. And an hour before they left for the airport some crazy cab driver sped him over to the Canadian Embassay, which was just a building with a lady and a bunch of cats. He got a new passport...it was an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper with a huge picture of him and her signature on it! Haha

INCORRECT.... for Dominican Republic anyway. To gain entry to the DR Canadian citizens need only proof of residency and a return flight ticket. I know this because I called the DR consulet last November to ask as it seemed likely I would not receive my new passport prior to a planned vacation. I cannot advise with regard to Cuba, however, I would suspect it is necessary.

Regardless of need, any citizen that can qualify for a passport should maintain one at all times IMO.

for cuba you need one. i know ppl who have gone to dominican and mexico without them in the past. you can get them pretty quick tho, it's def better to have them. i would speak to a travel agent before booking a trip if you don't have one

Your Travel agent should be well versed in all these issues so I would recommend having that conversation with them to make sure you are covered off for wherever you decide to go.

However...here are the basics....

DO YOU NEED A PASSPORT TO ENTER CUBA? YES

DO YOU NEED A PASSPORT TO ENTER DOM. REP? NO. BUT I'D RECOMMEND YOU DO.
For Canadian and U.S. citizens, a valid passport, or a birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship, along with photo identification, are required for both entry and exit. All tourists must purchase a visa/tourist card at a cost of $10.00 U.S. to enter the Dominican Republic. Canadian travellers are provided with this visa/tourist card before leaving Canada. Visitors who do not obtain a visa/tourist card prior to entry must purchase one at the airport when they arrive in the Dominican Republic.

PASSPORT REQ'd FOR MEXICO?: NO. BUT RECOMMEND YOU DO.
Although the Government of Canada recommends that Canadians travelling to any destination outside of Canada carry a valid passport, it is not mandatory for travel to the United States or Mexico. To date, there is no policy change requiring Canadians to travel with their passports to these destinations. However, you must have sufficient identification to satisfy border officials of your identity and citizenship.

PASSPORT POLICY CHANGES:
December 31, 2006 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

December 31, 2007 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
