| So I've been mixing trance for a while and im getting into DnB and Breaks and jus wondering about your guys mixing techniques with these kinds of beats..... im used to trance and jus listening to the beat... but my buddy said for breaks and especially for DnB i should listen to the cymbals instead of the beat... a lot less confusing.... jus wondering how u guys do it.... thanks.... |

| Snares, hi-hats, claps. Really you should listen to the overall track. That goes for mixing any genre though. |

yeah.
You can also pick out a beat in breaks too and match it as normal. Maybe try mixing breaks and normal tracks to get used to picking the beat in a breaks track and it will also help you listen to the track as a whole. After you can do that (which should be pretty quickly) try mixing two breaks tracks, it may be easier than you think. I can't really explain it too well, but yeah, listen to the track as a whole it shouldn't take too long to get used to.
When I started with breaks, cos I only had one or two tracks thats how I started and then just started mixing breaks tracks into each other when I got more tracks. Dunno if it'll actually help but I have no problems with breaks, maybe it helped maybe it didn't:conf: . Worth a try though. |

dnb and breaks together probably wouldn't work, dnb tempo is usually much higher than your average breaks track.
+1 to the hi-hats and snare suggestion.. in fact it may help you to cut the bass completely so you can only hear the highs of the cued track |

| i got big pants |
| with dnb...its just the mid's and high's. if you want....try to spin dnb with the bass cut out. it actually helps |

You have to learn to mix using the element that gives you the most information at that time as to how the mix is flowing. It isn't always going to be the kick, snare or hats. Naturally it isn't going to be a filter sweep but anything rythmical, even a bassline should be enough to match off.
As you DJ more though you just get to know if it sounds right or not so really the best way is using everything.
Cheers

| Sometimes with DnB you can acually beatmatch the tracks, just depends what songs you use. |
