IS the media racist?

I have to agree with some people that the media is a bit racist when it comes to reporting. Although i am the first to dismiss many cries of racism (since the allegation is grossly abused) i have to say that this time there is some merit.
While there is no doubt that most of the gun crime this year has been committed by young black males, most of the victims have also been black.
But what do we hear from politicians and the media in the last few days? "it's finally gone too far". Why? Because a young pretty white girl was killed? What about the innocent black bystanders that have been killed this year? What about the little 4 year old boy? wasnt that too far? Wasnt somebody else killed on the same corner this year? Where's the outcry for that person?
I think this city needs to take a long hard look at itself. The media needs to start reporting the facts instead of their spin on things. Politicians need to start acting instead of talking bull and people need to start demanding real solutions instead of banning law abiding citizens from owning guns and a false sense of security that would be provided by privacy invading CCTV.
Oh and lots stop blaming the US for our gun problems. Even if the guns came from there (which studies have proved most dont) they still were brought here by canadians and had to pass through CANADIAN CUSTOMS. |

is the media "racist" or does it simply sound good in print to report that some awful minority drug dealing thug gunman killed an innocent white girl?
spin...irresponsible spin, that is.
In addition to her ethnicity being irrelevant...it's also irrelevant that she's pretty...that's she was a good student...that she was an athlete...etc. etc. etc.
the fact is that an innocent bystander was killed by some piece of ...it shouldn't matter if it was a good little white girl or if it was a crackhead homeless person.
to the media though, it does...and people out there eat it up. |

Exactly... again im not one to usually put creedence into racism cries but the media these days is ing up our society more than most people realize. It's the manin source of people's thoughts now and it's really messing with our way of life. People buy into what they see on tv hook line and sinker. |

What you just stated there is the real problem. How come the majority of the victoms are also Black, when they are a minority in Toronto. Were most of these victoms involved with the drug trade , and in gang territory disputes? Dont these "thugs" have parents, or are their parents too busy being "thugs" & having illigitimate babies, to teach their kids they have to be respectable members of society. This is a personal issue with me, regardless of politics, and I really hate the lack of responsibility in society now in general, and everyone blaming everyone else, crying racism & expecting social handouts. I noticed where I live that no one really cares if a bunch of gangsta wannabes & drug dealers, and skid row heroin junkies are shooting at and killing each other, but when someone innocent gets shot, killed, or robbed it is news, especially when the person worked really hard to accomplish things, regardless of race.
Things will get worse in Toronto unless:
a) The Canadian justice system makes it very clear that crime doesn't pay.
b) The black community adopts a culture that encourages education & being respectable members of society, instead of being guetto faboulous. Those actions have to come from within.
If that doesn't happen then downtown Toronto will end up being just like Downtown Detroit, Southeast DC, and South Central Los Angeles.
In the U.S. people are crying racism in Maryland because most of the people on Death Row are Black, but at the same time the African American Community has 6 times the murder rate of everyone else, so I really dont see any real racism there. What's next, changing the statistics because they are unflattering or "racist".
What you noticed in Toronto is the same as I noticed in Detroit, DC & Baltimore. I really dont think any of the newscasters are racist, because they are only reporting what affects people in their daily lives, and if any innocent person gets robbed or shot over a few dollars, or hit by a random stray bullet in their neighbourhood, then that is important to them for many reasons. One being that they can pay more attention to their surroundings, take precautions, and avoid being a victom themselves. |

definatlely. But why is it that suddenly toronto has "lost its innocence" when a white girl was killed yet look at all the innocence that was lost before her this year alone. a 4 year old shot at home, another kid shot on a bus. Both black.
Again im usually the first to dismiss "racism" allegations as unfounded but i have to agree with this one. |

its not everyday a caucasian teen gets gunned down. and frankly people actually CARE about things like this. this is a common occurence in the states as well, with those missing persons, all the ones that seem to make headlines are innocent looking britney spears look-a-likes. |

I don't disagree with the idea that there can be a racial bias when reporting a story....just like there is a political bias as well.
The most recent shooting of a young white girl catches a bigger spot light because of the time of year and the fact she was a completely innocent individual just out doing her thing.
But the whole media racial thing has been around a long time.....there was a big up roar in the states about the media coverage a young, white, good looking, missing female got compared to a young, black missing female. |

The media isn't racist....... it's consumers are.
Media as an industry is concerned primarilly with selling papers or advertising (or both). To do this they need readership/veiwership/listenership. The best way to achieve growth in these areas is to give the market what they want, which is to say carry stories they care about. Subsequently, the story that the will propt people to buy the paper or stay tuned in for the news cast is the one that they feature. WE as a society seem to be more interested in the killing of an attractive 15 year old caucasian girl then we are the killing of a 17 year old black gang memeber, thus, the media will give greater coverage to said 15 year old girl. This isn't because the reporters, editors and news directors are racist..... it's because they are profit motivated.... it just so happens that stories containing certain racial elements generate more profit then others, this is our failing not the media's. |
