i'm really new to wine.. much more of a mixed drink/beer drinker.

Thanks, Alexander Payne, for turning every joe sixpack who saw your film into a bloody wine connoisseur...

Ah whatever. Heard the movie was pretty good anyway.

On topic: I've always been a fan of riesling whites. Very light, crisp... all that BS. Basically, I think they taste good. Nuff said.

For reds, actually pinot noir is a good choice. Cabernet Sauvignons are on the heavy side, you might wanna avoid them if that's not your bag.

And as far as selecting a bottle, I'd say stay within a price range of $8-15, really. There's a bevy of very drinkable wines in that range, and you'll save some dough too.

+1. No need to spend loads of dollars on a bottle when you can get something just as good (if not, close at least) for 8 dollars. Especially when it's 'just' for some drinking party, bringing a 50 dollar bottle is a waste of money.

-1 :p

Cabernet Sauvignon's are about the only ones I drink, most of them from South Africa, Southern America and / or Australia are pretty well enjoyable. I wouldn't say they're too heavy either, they've got a pretty distinct taste, yes, but enjoyable nonetheless. Not too fond of Merlots myself either. And that's not because of Sideways.
