The Construction Of A Musical Journey

When compiling a set, do you guys:

A) Find what is hot and new and throw it all out there?
B) Balance between what is new and what is old to make a set?

B all the way

I'd say B and also like to add: learn to understand the music first and then mix accordingly. That is Armin Van Buuren's biggest flaw. This guy is so focused on the trying to be the first dj to spin the latest tunes that he forgets about organization altogether. You gotta spend more time learning a track's elements such as where they break, intro, outro, etc etc etc. He ends up not knowing what he's spinning and the end result is a sloppy boring mix. All in all I say if there's no good trance going on at the moment, I'd spin some earlier stuff and some classics for the crowd's sake.

+1

age usually is irrelevant, it's all about the story itself and how the next track portrays what you want and where you want to go

if it's going to make a smashing mix and drive the crowd nuts, go for it

Think I got that tune ion an olddddddddddddddddd perfecto promo pack. Came with mixes of "down to earth too"

been told its fairly rare, i got it in a bargain pack that cost me 25quid for 25 vinyls.

Sweet.

If only that were true in the trance world as well :(

Can't hear any sets these days with tracks over 2 months old.

When I play out, I always try to just play good music rather than new music. But if I carry that theory on when Im making demos I get told by promoters that "its a good mix, but some of the tunes are a bit old"

For house (mainly mainstream) i find that songs and styles go in and out of fashion quickly. This may just be for where i live but i find that its hard to fit last years house into todays set.

With trance its a different story.

The main point is that nomatter if its new or old its just what sounds good.
