So we were missing a thread summerizing the year 2005! (no really we weren't :p)

What was this years most important events? Here are some of mine, just write whatever categories you want, personal, local, national, international etc. Political, non political...

This year's best thread...
Political Chillout Thread (it so feels like it has been there forever now :p)

This year's most annoying...
The European Union and its failure to reform (both to get a new constitution and to reform the new long term budget).

This year's most annoying (living) person...
Jacques Chirac for above stated reasons, plus that he just is an arrogant prick? :p

This year's most stupid and overrated news story... (could also be titled this years most annoying (dead) person(s))
The death of the pope... Seriously, how can so many ppl care?! (Teri Shiver as a close 2nd)

This year's biggest failure...
FEMA and other responsible for the total failure of the Katrina aftermath.

This year's most stupid major policy...
The EU's logging of all emails, telephone calls, smses etc.

This year's pet peeve...
The total lack of careing for the 80 000 who died in the Pakistani earthquake (governments didn't care much, media didn't care much and neither did normal ppl). Only reason I see is because there were too few westerners there, which is totally pissing of me off so ing much. :whip: :whip:

This year's best party...
Armin van Buuren @ Göta Källare

This year's longest posts in PDD...
Mr Opus! (That is a good thing though ;))

This year's best golf course...
Estrella Mountain Ranch, AZ

This year's favorite city...
New York City - My love just grows stronger :p

This year's favorite booze...
Jack Daniels

This year's most annoying personal relationship...
That with the "manager" of YFU-Canada!

Etc.

Now it's your turn :p

you're in the wrong place if you're looking for honest participation

that would require creativity, PDDs are about FACTS, STATISTICS, SOURCES, and BORING RAMBLINGS

You know, if they got rid of their 2-years-in-prison up to DEATH BY STONING penalty on those caught having gay sex, then I might care.

Does that mean I should have no simpaty for those that died of Katrina either, since they were in states which all have a big bunch of Christian fundies in them, something which I disagree with?

No state has a sodomy law as of 2003, and there are well established gay clubs and communities in all of those states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida). Where hate crimes still exist in isolated cases, it is generally not ok to go up to a gay guy and say, "dude, I totally saw you having sex with that other guy. That's not cool! Me and my buds are going to throw rocks at you now." Some Christians can be ignorant, but they don't advocate killing or jailtime.

(And yeah, on a serious note, 80,000 is a lot and if I were there, I'm sure my self-involvement would increase and I'd get overemotional and cry about it)

Well even though you don't treat your gays *as bad* as pakistan, I still disagree with how you treat them, does that mean I should not care for innocent deaths? Imo it shouldn't matter what the policies/customs in the country are, it is still innocent deaths.

In the spirit of summarizing things, here are some pretty awesome pictures from the year by Routers: http://i.today.reuters.com/Pictures...res/&edition=US

Agree. "Oh my god" was a close second!

This year's most annoying...
Jerks. Whether they're
- French people voting "non",
- criminals torching cars in Paris,
- people in Denmark comparing the holocaust with abortion,
- danish muslims travelling the muslim world to drum up hate of the Danish government because of drawings in a privately owned newspaper and deliberately using lies,
- editors of foreign newspapers who don't check into lies before publishing them,
- people excusing Bush through patriotism, and
- the bartender who served me a stale beer, and then proceeded to argue (poorly) with me.:)

This year's most annoying (living) person...

Jacques Chirac for above stated reasons, plus that he just is an arrogant prick? :p

Bush, Cindy Sheehan, and Bill O'Reilly all share in on the number one spot, I think.
This year's most stupid and overrated news story...

Shiavo?

This year's biggest failure...
Lack of help for the victims in Pakistan.

This year's best party...
Adam Beyer @ Sullivan Room, NYC :)

This year's favorite city...

Agree!

Best new tv-show
The Colbert Report

Best old tv-show
The Simpsons

Worst trend
Ghost tracks. What the heck is the point of these? All they do is mess up your rips of the last track of the CD, and if they're good you have to skip through the CD to get to it. Either the track is good, and then give it a track number, or it is crap, and you keep it off the record.:whip:

U.S. might not grant full rights to gays and many states impose harsh laws against them (i.e. no partner rights, no adoption rights, etc.), but at the same time NO WHERE in the U.S. is it okay or written into law that's it's fine to stone a fag.

As for your point, I made a statement not to care for deaths in Pakistan when Pakistan okays deaths for gays. That is a fair (though politically harsh) opinion. But it is different for you to say that you don't care for innocent victims in the US when the laws in the US are not advocating killing gay people. So your hypothetical point does not demoralize my opinion because you are equating my opinion of a specific death penalty to a fallacious generalization that one should not care for the innocent if one disagrees with the policies.

However, I give you the win on this debate. You're right: I shouldn't take a law written by s and apply it to thousands of people who have no choice but to live under that law.

I heart you, Canadian. :D
