Something I have been thinking about:
I have been trying to create my first bass sound (and bassline) for a track which I am not sure which style it will be yet (likely proggy). In any case, I am wondering about these bass sounds. The presets I hear are nothing like what are in tracks. Now is this because of the effects used to make the sounds sound better, or is it just that the presets suck, and the sounds I create suck too?
Any enlightenment would be great .. .

| Well, most (almost every) time presets need more or less tweaking to make them suit the track. Also there is always some processing on the sound, not necessarily to make the sound itself better, but to make it fit the mix better. |

I think you will find that EQ plays a big part in making the bass and other sounds fit well in a track. The presets are usually raw sounds (no fx or eq) so they need some tweaking to fit in with the flow of your tracks.
It's highly unlikely you could get away with making a song with raw presets from synths.
For Bass sounds I would try:
1. Play around with the EQ, notch filter and sweep with the knobs.
2. Add some compression.
3. layer other sounds with the bass (play 2 different bass presets at the same time)
There is no magic setting when it comes to creating sounds, it's how well you make them all sound together that's the magic. :crazy: |

1. Making original bass sounds is tough and you're not likely to find many good ones in the stock patches.
2. Basslines in professional tracks typically have effects and (more importantly) compression applied to them to make them stand out. Valves in particular work wonders.
3. EQ them, but EQ them with intent - they can't clash too much with the kick, and boosting the low end too much will actually weaken them.

For me it was just trying to get my head around these initial sounds which seem emty to the the final product ... |
