JERUSALEM
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a "significant" stroke Wednesday, a hospital official said, after Sharon was taken to the hospital from his ranch in the Negev desert.
Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef said Sharon suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, is under general anesthetic and is receiving breathing assistance and was being taken for treatment. Cabinet Secretary Yisrael Maimon said Sharon's authorities have been transferred to his vice premier, Ehud Olmert.
In a brief statement outside the hospital, Mor-Yosef said Sharon had suffered "a significant stroke," adding that he was "under anesthetic and receiving breathing assistance." A few minutes later, Mor-Yosef emerged to say that initial tests showed Sharon had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, or bleeding inside his brain.
Addressing reporters in English, Mor-Yosef said Sharon had "massive bleeding and was being transferred to an operating theater."
Channel 2 TV said Sharon was suffering from paralysis in his lower body. Analysts on Israeli TV stations said he life could be in danger. Channel 2 TV said he was taken into the hospital on a stretcher.
Sharon, 77, is extremely overweight, but doctors checking him after the mild stroke Dec. 18 found him otherwise in good health. Since then, his doctors said in a briefing a week ago, Sharon has lost several kilograms (pounds).
The dramatic downturn in Sharon's health comes as Sharon runs for re- election on March 28 at the head of a new centrist party, Kadima, and he enjoys a wide lead in the polls. The party's strength is centered on Sharon himself, and if he were forced to leave the scene. Israel's political scene would be thrown into turmoil.
Sharon's office said his personal physician was with him. He was taken by ambulance, a drive of more than an hour from his ranch in the Negev Desert in Israel's south, instead of by helicopter.
On Dec. 18, Sharon was taken to Hadassah Hospital from his office after suffering a mild stroke. Doctors said he would not suffer long- term effects from the stroke, but they discovered a birth defect in his heart that apparently contributed to the stroke.
Security agents and police spread out around the Jerusalem hospital before Sharon arrived, setting up a security perimeter.
Since the first stroke, Sharon has been receiving blood thinners to try to prevent a recurrence of the clotting that caused the stroke.
Sharon was to check into the Jerusalem hospital on Thursday for the procedure _ repairing a tiny hole between the upper chambers of his heart. Doctors said the blood clot that briefly lodged in Sharon's brain on Dec. 18, causing the stroke, made its way through the hold and from there to a cranial artery.

| Yikes, back to back strokes is definitely not a positive sign for his prognosis. Wonder who would ultimatley lead the Kadima party should he not be able to function in such a capacity as leader any longer. |

Yeah this isn't good news. As if that area isn't dealing with enough trouble as it is.

Doctors: Sharon stroke caused by bleeding in the brain
(CNN) -- Neurologists said the prognosis does not look good for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who underwent a second surgery early Thursday to control bleeding in his brain after a massive stroke.
Doctors told CNN that it was unlikely that Sharon would return to full health and that the chances of him dying were high.
Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef of Jerusalem's Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital said Thursday that Sharon was in intensive care and was in "serious condition, but stable." (Watch Sharon clings to life -- 2:23)

Exactly. I think of this as a good thing. If he does die, some young moderate should take over. Even though he had a winning streak with the whole gaza strip/peace issue, old people are old fashioned and as history will remind you they are very hellbent on following the traditions of their country. I'm not talking about culture traditions, but rather in the way they handle government. |

Not in this case. A new kid will have no support and no trust from the populace. Sharon was a proven leader of Israel and was known to be tough of security, many Israelis assured themselve his wisdom of years and the trust and life long pursuit a secure Israel, even while skeptical of his policies.
There is simply not another comprable figure which has the trust of the nation to make the hard choices. Therefore you will get a figure which will not make any/little hard choice. |

Not only that but since when does a "young kid" ever get elected or even care for the most part? For example, here in America most people who don't vote are that 18-24 group who ( i cannot believe i'm using this in a political discussion but) P. Diddy or now known as just plain Diddy was trying to get to vote.
An "old person" though Sharon isn't all that old, is educated, experienced in different fields and not just by touching upon them but years of experiences in handling and/or dealing with issues. |

You two make excellent points. For one you, Yoepus experience first hand what it is like to live under the Sharon government and Lepanto my friend make another big point about not caring. Sadly not many young people care about what's going on with their government and how their country is run. But the young kid I was referring to would be around the age of our former President Kennedy from the 60's. That guy was one of the youngest and dare I say most beloved presidents of our time. Although his administration wasn't so innocent there was a sense of renewed assurance in our government. But as both of you suggest experience and wisdom > younth and incompetence. Thanks for teaching me something new.:) |

:haha: We all know that Pat Robertson is nuts and says crazy things that piss many people off, but I never expected this from him:

Israel punishes US TV evangelist
Israel is pulling out of a $50 million deal with US TV evangelist Pat Robertson after he said Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine retribution.
Tourism Ministry spokesman Ido Hartuv said Israel would not sign a contract with Mr Robertson to build a biblical theme park by the Sea of Galilee.
Mr Robertson suggested on his popular TV show the stroke was a punishment for Israel's withdrawal from Gaza.
His remarks were condemned by the US government and American Jewish groups.
Mr Robertson was leading a group of evangelical Christians hoping to build the Galilee World Heritage Park.

The centre was expected to cover nearly 35 acres (14 hectares) north-east of the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus is believed to have delivered the Sermon on the Mount.
It would have had a park, an auditorium, a Holy Land exhibition, outdoor amphitheatres, information centre and a media studio.
The Israeli government had tentatively agreed to provide land and infrastructure for the centre in the hope of generating millions of dollars from tourism.
But relations soured when Mr Robertson said God wanted Israel to be whole and undivided and had therefore punished Mr Sharon for Israel's pull-out from the Gaza Strip last year.
"You read the Bible: This is my land, and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he's going to carve it up and give it away, God says no, this is mine," he said last week.
'Unacceptable'
Mr Hartuv said his government was furious with Mr Robertson's remarks.
"We were due to sign a contract in the near future with Mr Roberson for the construction of a new Christian heritage centre in the Galilee," he told the AFP news agency.
"We, as the State of Israel, cannot accept what he said and we will not do any business with him or with anyone else who agrees with his view."
But Mr Hartuv insisted Israel had not rejected outright the idea of building the centre.
"The contract is still open - just not with Mr Robertson."
"If there are other Christian leaders, they are most welcome to sign a contract to bring Christian tourists to the state of Israel."
Mr Robertson is no stranger to controversy.
He was forced to apologise last year for calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. |
