I just bought IBM Thinkpad and it has Windows XP Professional loaded in it. But their is no MS Word or Excel and other stuffs in normal Window version.
Do I have to load it?
Whats Professional for? Do Bill Gates expect me to type letters in Notepad? |

But than what extra additional feature does this 'Professional Edition' have? If only I have to download an Office suit?
In the cost breakup on my bill its like extra 300 USD for this edition, but I cant find anything related to business in it.. |

There are several editions of office. If you're a student, you may be entitled to Academic version of office for $99 (or less). Some folks sell Academic edition on ebay for $99 or cheaper. Check around on mysimon.com, froogle.com, or pricewatch.com.
You don't need professional. There are several versions of office available, the main differences are what they come with.
Most people need to have:
word
excel
outlook
In some rare cases you may need to have power point and publisher. even rarer still, ms access.
If you can live without crapware like access, get the "basic" edition. it would have all the things you need.
However, for the most economical solution, buy Office XP. There are no major differences between the two and you get support at least until 2011. http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=2533
You can probably buy office XP pro for about $80.
Enjoy. |

Thinkpad's don't come with Office.
My dad works for IBM, and says that the reason for no MS Office, is that IBM would rather have pushed Lotus back in the day.
But now IBM no longer own Thinkpad, and has been infact taken over by Lenovo.
So in other words, you gotta go and buy something! |

I wonder why I paid extra for Windows Professional.
I should have bought the DOS version of this notebook and loaded myself pirated versions of Office XP.
Bill Gates you suck! |

A DOS version of IBM is nothing but a Thinkpad without any operating softwares installed in it. People who might use Linux or other operating systems buy this version. It costs much less as the registeration and licence fees for Windows is not included in the cost.
No its not home edition of Windows XP, I know whats home edition and professional edition XP. |

I just think it's odd seeing that while this is common for desktops you usually don't see this on laptops. Also IBM does not own thinkpad, Lenovo does. I also belive that they don't even offer linux as an option at all or a DOS version (not saying that linux won't support it) |
