Creating innovative Drum and Bass rhythm sections

How does one go about creating a jungle/DnB rhythm track?

I mean, I know the basics: ~160 bpm, 4/4, and snare on the 2 and 4. But how do DnB composers do it?

What is needed for that sound?

Good samples?

There's also ghost hits etc. involved, but anyways I'm also tired of everyone going by some generic rules when it comes to beats. Here's a clip I've been working on lately:

Trying to come up with something new instead of the basic 4/4 rhytm...

That is a bad ass rhythm pattern. I love it. See that is the type of thing I want to create. Something different you know?!!!

Well, honestly, if you want to create something different, don't ask how to do it. Because the answer you're likely to get has already been done. One thing that helps me get into the groove is to slice up some loops and layer them on top of eachother (copy the slicing pattern of the first drumloop to the 2nd but have it trigger a different loop). Then just start playing around with bass rythyms. Move notes around, experiment with the snap set to none or to 1/32 or something. This can help you get grooves you won't normally try with the snap set higher.

Wanna creat some crazy beats...here's a trick that kicks ass.....load up some break loops(I suggest the sample cd BT Breaks From The New Skool for this)...they can be any kind of breaks you want...like hip-hop, funk, jungle, jazz, whatever man..anyway load up each loop into a sampler and have a single loop set to be triggered to a single key on your master keyboard....now try playing out some funky beats.....also another tirck that I used to use before was to do the same process as above but set my master keyboard to play an arpeggiator and start playing some notes...the sampels will trigger and give you some crazy insane results.

i think drum and bass is definatly one of more linear formulas to go by. and why slap a gender on your track...before you've have even made it? pick a good time and start creating without expectation. without expectation for the song and for yourself. see what happens. best of luck.

i think one of the best ways to learn how to produce a certain type of sound is to imitate another artist's work. if i were you, i would listen to a certain dnb beat that you like (that isn't too crazy), slow it down to about 135bpm, and try to pick out/transcribe all of the different samples it uses and slap it in fruity loops. or better yet, just check out some of the pre-loaded dnb samples in fruity loops and study it. then try to reproduce it by yourself.

drumbeats, as with all music, has a certain pattern that you will pick up on if you hear it enough.

To create some really wicked fills and that IDMish percussion manipulation in an easy way, just try the vstplugin Dblue glitch... its impressive :)
