any port that is not being used by your computer and or router is a good port :). try to stay away from 6000 series ports though as they are majorly used. go in late 7000 or as the first post mentions go to 1720 :)

I called rogers, they are limiting torrent speed in high traffic areas.

the trick with torrents is using a good tracker.. if you are using Torrentspy, there is a higher likelihood of leechers to seeder ratios, which is gonna slow your download.. so find a good private tracker... i personally use Araditracker.com, but you have to watch out for your ratio's because private trackers will ban you for having a poor ratio.

if you are using BitComet, get rid of it, it was handy due to it using encrypted packets, which of course was handy cause Roger's couldn't track your bandwidth use, but as trancegrooves said, there are serious security flaws with that program. ( as well, 98% of private trackers will not allow access from bitcomet users.)

there isn't much you can do to "speed" up your download, it's a P2P based system, you are only gonna get, what other people are giving. hence the use of private trackers, cause the majority of people seed with good speeds.

Limiting your torrent program to use only one port, will actually slow down your download, whereas if you let your torrent program handle it, you can accept more incoming cconnections. I usually have at leasst 8-12 torrents going at any one time.

now when i did live in Toronto, i did notice speed difference in the services from rogers, this is due to the population density of your network. Toronto's network is much more busier than say hmmm Waterloo's.

NOTE: if you are on Rogers and downloading excessively, you must watch your CAP.. Roger's has a 60 gig a month cap, you can monitor this by loging into Rogers.ca and viewing your internet usage.

for those of you on a router.. i have no suggestions, as i hate routers, always a pain in the ass. you want to open a range of ports for your torrent program to utilize..

i max out my connection while i'm at work, usually pulling at least 600k/s

first off if you are using anything but azureus and / or utorrent delete it and get one of those 2 clients properly updated. Why? well for a simple reason. Bitcoment and bitspirit and other clients of that sort do not have a private flag in their clients. this allows peers to connect from trackerless sites and that is a security concern for alot of other torrent sites that use the private flag. Azureus and U torrent have the private flag in their client and is highly recommended by majority of torrent sites.

Azureus is a really good program, probably the best BT software, but it also really s up some people's computers. I can't use it on my machine - if I do, it eventually enters a state where the System process starts going up to 99% CPU every few minutes, then gradually speeds up to every few seconds. This state is really hard to get rid of, too - it doesn't go away after a reboot, I think I solved it last time by reformatting. It's a problem that's been reported by other people as well - I think it's some weird interrelation between Azureus, the JVM, and certain drivers on certain systems.

Since then, I've hardly used torrents at all. Maybe I'll give uTorrent a shot if it's proper Win32 code and not crummy Java.
