Okay after tons of reading I believe I've simplified a ton
of confusion that I recently had about theory.

Let me recap, and if I missed anything or I have no clue
wtf I'm talking about, feel free to flame.

Basically, here's what I believe is the correct thing to do.

1 - Pick a scale fitting for your type of music.
2 - Pick which key your song will be in.
3 - Using your scale and key, figure out which keys may be played
without going out of harmony.
4 - Write the first melody lines using simple notes until you
think you're on to something.
5 - Expand your sound and make it "thicker" by adding 3rd's,
5th's, etc. to make chords and also by layering and etc.

Does this sound right to you experts out there?
I wrote something pretty decent using this method, and I'll
gladly post the sample if you guys give me a place to upload the sample.

just remember, straying from a set scale a little bit is not necessarily a bad thing.

I suppose but i doubt him or a majority of the TA's here would use advanced jazz techniques to make 4 measure melodies. Most people just find a key and stick to it.

Just do what sounds right to your ears and properly expresses what you want to express.
