i posted this on the computer help section, but no one goes over there :(.
1-i am about to reformat my Toshiba laptop. it came with a recovery disk, but no XP disk. i called them up and they said that XP is on the recovery disk and that after i do that the computer will be just like when i first got it. does this sound right? any other toshiba users know? i also have an XP disk that i can use if this isnt right.
2-i have backed up my files and i am in the process of backing up my favourites on Mozilla. i just saved the whole Mozilla folder on the other hard drive. will this save everything and then when i am finished reformatting, can just move it over, or will i have to reinstall it all over again? i dont want to lose my book marks.
3-next stupid question...when they say drivers they mean all the CDs that i got with my programs, i.e. nero, office etc., right?
thanks in advance, i am new to reformatting. i have had the computer for 2 years, it is time for a reformat. |

| 3- drivers are the programs that make the HARDWARE work. A printer needs drivers to work. Your video card needs drivers etc... |

| i dont have that much hardware. just my external hard drive. and i have a CD that i used to install that. so that would be the driver, correct? |

you will need to download drivers for your
Graphics Card and
Sound Card
- pretty much wat sunsnail said just thought id emphasize it |

1. Yes, your recovery disc probably has windows xp on it. Your laptop may also have a seperate partition with all your system files on it, and the cd may access that in the recovery process. Your laptop will be exactly as it was out of the box, with some luck (My recovery discs recovered about 85% of my original programs).
2. Your Mozilla idea may work, but i suggest mozBackUp a utility which will make moving your mozilla profiles a snap.
3. Drivers are not your software. As someone else said, they're bits of codes that allow your hardware to work. Most of the drivers you need should be native to Windows XP or have been added there by Toshiba. Anything else you should be able to pull off the internet, if you don't have an accompanying cd. |

im sure it'll be on the recovery CD or windows will already have it. If your sound doesn't work then come back to this thread ;) |

1. The recovery disk (CD) typically contains an image of the main hard drive when the computer was new to you. It would have these things pre-installed - operating system, some applications, utilities for the motherboard, and drivers for any other hardware that was present when you received the computer.
On newer Brand-Name computers, there is no recovery disk. The image is stored on a hidden partition on the hard drive. Pressing a particular combination of keys would restore the hard drive to its original "like-new" state. |
