Rather than sensitive military information, they could have been providing domestic information about the Cuban community in Miami (I believe rather large) such as, what Cuban dissenters are alive or perhaps revealed plans to sneak people over. In America, we share alot of personal information with our co-workers and by infiltrating, so to speak, the local Cuban community they might have heard anything. The article mentions another group of exiles who claim to be doing just that.
Maybe it's just my experience, but professors in a large university setting seem to know what goes on around campus. English professors know about the Chemistry department and Business profs talk about the research the biologists are doing. Even without knowledge of details, an administrator privy to this type of general information is helpful.
